Alright, so I'm setting up my 5gallon hex as a blackwater tank after I set it up for a saltwater reef. I'm tearing the reef apart (no corals) because I don't have the time for it, my girlfriends getting my LR and live sand.

Now, the stock of the tank is going to be like 5-6 neon tetras (as it was before), but I never had my question answered about snails. I know that the lack of calcium in the water may affect the snails shell and cause them to die. But will they be able to survive??

I've had snails in a blackwater setup but as you mentioned, they did have shell problems because of low calcium levels. They did live for quite a while tho, they just looked crappy and you had to be careful handling them. The tank had a PH of about 6 and virtually no hardness. If you have the GH between 50 & 100ppm you can still use black water extract or something similar and the snails should be fine.

good to know, thanks much for that info. I'll be using bogwood and natural peat moss.
