Snails....but Not A Problem

Quick question:

I am going to be getting a bunch of Ottos to help eat up some algae (and they are cool ) I am also, further down the line, going to get a snowball plec.

Now, snails, i always hear they are a pest etc etc. but are they? I can buy some quite easily, so why are they a problem if people buy them?!

So from what i understand, they are great for eating up algae? Anything else?

Will they be fine if i have ottos? Anything to be aware of?

Found a good article which answered some questions.

I guess the thing that was highlighted was the worry of them eating plants! The article seemed to suggest that they should only eat dead plants and leave the live ones along....this sounds great, but is it reality?
