I've had two clown loaches for about six years now. They've lived in my tank longer than anything, and have survived quite a lot. I rarely see them, except for in the morning when they come out from behind all of the wood/plants in the tank and come to the top for food. Otherwise, they're essentially invisible in the tank. So you can imagine the panic I felt a couple of weeks ago when I looked up from the movie I was watching and saw the two of them up at the front of the tank, lying on their backs in the gravel. I jumped out of bed, thinking to myself, "How could they both just up and die on me simultaneously???" as I raced towards my tank. Of course, being easily spooked as they are, they both shot up and behind their piece of wood.

I was at a loss for their random behavior, but shrugged it off. This has, however, developed into a nightly ritual. At approximately 10:30 each evening, they both come out of the woodwork, find their spot under this specific plant in the tank, and roll over on their sides/backs. And there they sleep until I get up for something and spook them back into their corner. They even prop their heads on nearby stones like pillows! Earlier, I watched them napping, back to back (see photo below), and they actually got into a bit of a shoving match over the rock they were sharing as a pillow. It was like watching a married couple fight over the blankets!

And now as I sit here, they've both found their spots again and are out cold. It seriously looks like I've got two large dead fish at the bottom of my tank, right up front and center! Is this normal? Does anyone else have loaches (or any sort of fish I suppose) that do this? They don't appear to be sick, but I've never had fish behave like this before!

That's reassuring! I've had them for 6 years but have never actually seen them sleep. I can't really see behind the log they inhabit. I wasn't sure if it was normal or the development of some disease.

those are lovely loeaches :)

i think it is natural... kinda funny

 the times i used to think mine were dead

they are like puppies.. just get comfy and sleep.. quite normal :)
( very cute pic)

Most of my clowns sleep upside down, and the others on their sides. I have one that squeezes into a gap in the rocks and sleeps on his side, looking very dead. It freaks out my partner :D

Brill picture, that would frighten me seeing them like that. My big plec use to sleep partially on his side on some bogwood till he got to big to fit on it.

My 3 polka dot loaches sleep in the evenings right in the front of the tank against the glass.
Either on their fronts, or occasionally on their sides.
Never seen them sleep on their backs though -that would be hilarious !

The other thing is that sometimes 2 of them will play fight, and it goes on for hours, whirling
and twirling round and round really fast like a hoola hoop.
They totally ignore everything else and get completely wrapped in their own world.
They are the funniest fish !

Takes a while to get used to seeing it

One of mine lies on it's side and floats around the top of the water in the current, very wierd!

Some of mine do this

Funny thing is some do it always some never and some occasionally

You just cant beat Clowns for character :good: and crazy antics.

Great picture thanks for sharing
