1 - yes you can

2 - aquarium safe sillicon (your fish shop or eBay are places to find it)

.....made a slate cave myself about 4hrs ago :)

thanks for the quick reply, have you got any pictures of your cave?

cheers

You can also use super glue to stick things together. You need to make sure the only ingredient in it is cyanoacylate though for it to be aquarium safe.

haven't got a picture, but it's just 3 pieces of slate fixed together to make a triangular shape. My BN plec loves his current one but has outgrown it....so needs something a bit bigger.

Superglue can be used, but you've got to have some very good flat contact areas. With silicon it doesn't have to be so presie as you can dollop loads on to create the contact area from that instead.

Yes, I have used JBL Haru black all purpose adhesive (from Zooplus) to glue slate, as it virtually the same colour as the slate I was glueing. It took a day or two to set hard enough to allow handling and is extremely messy stuff so mask off, with masking tape around joints etc, so as to not contaminate areas you don't want to get glue.

Oh if glueing a "pile" of slate drill a hole through each slate piece, and insert a large nail covered with silicone oil (to stop the glue sticking to the nail) before glueing each piece. I tried to glue a "pile" of slate, but it ended up sliding apart when it got a few layers high. Much better with the nail, leave glue to set a day or two and pull nail out, or you could use a plastic rod and just leave in place.

Yes, just wash it clean before using, and I recommen aquarium safe silicone as well. The slate has to be dry though, and you will have to give the silicone enough time to dry aswell.

Those are something I've made from slate, using silicone.
