Potential problem with sponge filter media - question

Well, I felt smart when I modified my AquaClear AC20 in my 10 gallon tank to have two OEM sponges topped with a water polisher, as shown below. I don't use chemical media, but now I'm treating for ich. I saved the unused carbon bag that came with the filter, and after the treatment I want to use the carbon to remove the meds. But if I just pull one of the blue sponges and keep it in the tank while I replace it with the carbon, will the bacteria die? My understanding is that they need fresh, oxygenated water flowing through the sponge to keep them healthy, like in a sponge filter. If I use the carbon for several days with the sponge just sitting in the tank, will that be bad? There is not enough room for the carbon bag without removing one blue sponge. I think. Maybe removing the top water polisher is OK. I can toss that and cut a new one later.

How would you handle this?

I just remembered, I have an unused Marina Slim S10 filter that I replaced with the AC20. I can press that into service for the carbon if need be. I'm still curious about what would happen to the blue sponge if it just sat in the tank for a few days, though. If you know, please tell me. But I think the slim S10 is the answer for me.

The bacteria don't die off that quickly, they go dormant. You can throw the sponge on the floor for a couple weeks and pick it up and use it again without problems.

If you’re that worried about it rubber band an air stone to it and plop it in your aquarium but I agree with @ghyti it takes longer than you think for the bacteria to die off .

I just remembered, I have an unused Marina Slim S10 filter that I replaced with the AC20. I can press that into service for the carbon if need be.

I have a small internal filter that I use just for carbon if ever I need to medicate the tank.
A big water change first will get rid of most of the med leaving just a small amount for the carbon to remove.

Neat idea about the little box filter!! I will do a 50% water change at the end.

Oh and the original charcoal bag fits if I take out the skinny polishing layer. I’m still curious if the blue sponge would be ok after sitting in the tank for a couple days. Anyone know the answer?
