Silly advice from the lfs

When i went to my local pets at home once, i was looking at the fish- about 2 dead fish in each tank but, i overheard the guy say to a customer that in a 60l tank he could have 2 oscars, and 20 neon tetras and a common plec!!!!

Another one: I was at a garden centre that sells fish, the guy said a customer could have 5 angels an elephant nose and a black ghost knife in a 20 gallon!

the people that teach these guys must be on some serious drugs. what do you think? LSD? Mushrooms or crack?
I agree, the teachers are on drugs but the employees must be on drugs to believe it! I think all aquatic store wrkers should read a little and research fish a little bit more lol.

When i woked saturdays at an LFS we were properly taught about the fish. and we always gave correct aadvice. but at PETS AT HOME. they really know nothing.

my LFS where i buy alot of my stuff from always tell people their tank is too small for what they are gettting.
these guys actualy think that a few mollies and 2 gourami's need a 55G tank... its ridiculous.

my uncle had a 6ft malawi tank and they refused to sell him anything becuase his tank was too small. or "overstocked" its malawis for gods sake!!!

laughable that they are selling Buttikoferi and Tilapia to unsuspecting people.

they also sold me a "channa Striata" common snakehead which is ileagel in pretty much all of america for about 2£ as a goby....

At PetCo I was informed that a fully grown common pleco needs a 30 gallon fishtank because they don't make 24 gallon fishtanlks. (Obviously going by the inch per gallon rule.

Then there was the girl at the mom and pop store who told me that 2 bala sharks would be fine in a ten gallon tank.

I could go on and on...

A while a go, I went to Pets At Home. The girl serving me, realising I had a little knowledge of fishkeeping started asking me about her set up. Claiming she lost roughly (indicating with her finger and thumb) three inches of water due to evaporation in less than a week. In a cold tank!
I don't think I'll ever forget that.

When I worked at an LFS, a couple of the people that I worked with claimed that you could change any fish from freshwater to saltwater and vise versa... So sad.

lol, wow, "Mommy mommy, look at that goldfish swimming in this coral reef, and look at that great white shark swimming in the amazon basin!"

I mean, you dont need to research on your own for that, you learn that stuff in school lol, they either didnt go to school, or got high on lsd, shrooms, weed etc during school and forgot everything, and of course since it is adictive, they still take those drugs and are still dumb like was said before....

lfs told me that a flathead catfish could go in a 10g no problem.

btw the state record for a flathead catfish where i am is at 69lbs i believe. and over 6 foot long

some lad at pets at home nottingham looked at me gone out when i said i was in the 4th week of fishless cycling... he told me i can cycle my tank in a week by leaving my tank running empty with some stress zyme

An employee and mY LFS told me that to setup my tank, all I'd have to do is turn the filter on for one week then come back and put some fish in there. I came back (now you guys have gotta realize that I'm like 6 years old here) and he sold me somekind of rainbow fish, if I remember correctly, a tiger barb, 4 Neon tetra's that died three days later, and two huge cichlids( at least that's what I theink they were, One was approx 5inches, and the other-oh never mind- the other was a gold fish like 4inches, all in a 10 gal!, ( I know, I know but don't blame me or my parents as I was too young to understand and wanted a pet- due to me allergies to fur- so they got me fish)

Long story short: Lot's of fish were hurt and cruelly put to death in the making of this paragraph. :rip:

CURSE THE LFS!!!!! :oh:

I've never shopped there since *sniff*

I here Pets At Home mentioned a lot. It sounds like they are really bad. They actually sound comparable to the bigger LFS stores we have in the states like Pet Co and Petsmart. They have reasonable prices on supplies but you wouldn't want to get advice there.

Now where i live in addition to the big stores like Pet Co and Petsmart we have at least five small mom and pop LFS's with people who have been in this hobby for a long time, some 20-30 years or more. Those are the places i like to go.

i don't actually have any stories about bad petshop advice. Most of the people I've actually spoken with at any length have either known their stuff, or were clearly making honest attempts to learn about what they were selling - and that's independent as well as chain stores. Now I've heard lots of things that are debatable (ex:tank sizes, live food) and some ALMOST right (ex: adult size an inch or two off) info, but never flat out wrong.

Guess I've been lucky, but kinda feels like I'm missing out.

Petsmart employee: All tropical fish need salt in the tank (Yes I promptly bought a container of aquarium salt) Does anyone want to buy an unopened box of API aquarium salt???
