Hello I am looking for some help please - I bought my beautiful new betta fish 4 days ago from lfs and yesterday noticed his chin and tail had a gray tinge to them then this morning his tail had completely gone - he is literally now just the fish body with a few strands of fin here and there. I have moved him to a smaller 5.5g tank and is in the quiet and dark, i treated the tank with aq salt and interfin anti fungus and fin rot according to the instructions. He is not eating and is a present perched on a plant leaf towards the top of the tank.
When I first got him home, I floated the bag for half hour then added some of the tank water to the bag and floated for a further half hour then released him. He was happy I think - he went into a 90 litre (20 gallon or so) 25temp, amm 0 and nitrate 0 with 5 danios - the tank has been cycled. He ate happily day one and two then stopped. The danios left him alone to my knowledge. Am stumped - could he have been sick from the lfs or perhaps got stuck in the filter - the current was a bit fast for him but he found a nice hide away where the water was still. Would love someones advice if I can do anything else for him - and if his fins will ever grow back should he survive this ... thanks

if the fins were just gone over night then i'd put money on the danios doing it, finrot doesn't work that quick.

Just keep his water clean with small daily water changes and it should start to grow back.

I'd leave him in the 5.5gal

Thanks - I forgot to add before that his chin and tail had gone a gray colour the day before - do you know what this is from?

Yup, sounds like the work of nippy Danios. One of my Bettas suffered similar injuries in the past when housed with 6 Leopard Danios and a Sucking Loach.

I moved him into a hospital tank and with a little love (and a lot of Bloodworm!!) he grew his finage back and even gained more striking colours in little streaks across his tail.

Best of luck.

Ah sorry to hear this. Listen to lilfishie's advice and I'll keep my fingers crossed that he pulls through for you.

that is probably fin rot, which part do you mean by his chin?

Ah not really sure what the area is called but on his under side just back from his mouth kind of around where his "beard" fin is (ventral ?) but not his fins themselves - on his body. If you were to tickle him - you would prob choose this spot (if you could lol ;-) )

Just had a look at a Betta anatomy on line and it is the patch between the bottom of his gills and the beardy fins - ta :good:

does it look fluffy at all? i'd get some finrot/fungus treatment just incase but fresh clean water should do the trick :good:

any chance you could get a picture of him?

Thanks - I added Interpet Anti Fungus and Fin Rot treatment and some aquarium salt too - the water is fresh yesterday, amm and nit levels are both 0. Temp 25C.

I will do a pic now and put it up = he sure looks sadder than sad... please tell me honestly once you see him if you think he has a fighting chance and if not - whats is the kindest way to end his misery... :dunno:

oh also not fluffy at all
