Iā€™m dealing with a sick betta and I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. I have a female veil tail that Iā€™ve had for six months now. Her symptoms seemed to come of nowhere. I got back from work to discover a really swollen gill that seemed to be like rotting away at the ends with this white tissue. Sheā€™s covered in quite a bit of those black stress marks, mainly towards the front of her body by the gills. She has one or two white specks on her, but it doesnā€™t look like the pictures of ich Iā€™ve seen? Her fins also arenā€™t spreading very well. I did a twenty percent water change and bought the api melafix and their stress coat and added it to the tank. Sheā€™s not resting at the bottom of the tank or floating on her side or anything, but sheā€™s clearly not happy. Can anyone please give me some advice on what to do moving forward or tell me what they think is going on? Anything I might have missed? Thank you

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

What are the tank dimensions (length x width x height)?
What is the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH of the water?
How often do you do water changes and how much water do you change?
Do you gravel clean the substrate when you do a water change?
Do you dechlorinate the new water before adding it to the tank?
What sort of filter do you have?
How often do you clean the filter and how do you clean it?

Any chance of a picture and short 20 second video of the fish?
If the pictures are too big for the website, set the camera's resolution to its lowest setting and take some more. The lower resolution will make the images smaller and they should fit on this website. Check the pictures on your pc and find a couple that are clear and show the problem, and post them here. Make sure you turn the camera's resolution back up after you have taken the pics otherwise all your pictures will be small.

If the video is too big for this website, post it on YouTube and copy & paste the link here. We can view it at YouTube. If you are using a mobile phone to take the video, have the phone horizontal so the video takes up the entire screen. If you have the phone vertical, you get video in the middle and black on either side.

The following link has information about what to do if your fish get sick. It's long and boring but worth knowing.

Do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate every day until the matter is identified or resolved. Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

Clean the filter if it hasn't been done in the last 2 weeks. Wash filter materials in a bucket of tank water. Do not replace filter media.

Melafix shouldnā€™t be used on Bettas. The oil can coat their labyrinth organ causing them to suffocate. I agree that we need some pics or short video.
