Has anyone had any experience with shipping fish in extremely hot weather? The daily highs where I live are anywhere from 105 - 115 degrees and will probably be like this until October. I found some fish I would die to have, they are albino koi (orange and white) lyretail swordtails. They are in Thailand and would have to go to a transhipper and then on to me. From the transhipper to me would be overnight and I could request morning delivery (hopefully). Do you think they could handle it or would it be to risky? I know the lfs's get deliverys all year round so apparently it can be done but I don't know what their casulty rate is. Considering that by the time I factor in shipping I'm looking at close to $100 for one pair, I'd really hate to lose either one or both of them.

And for those of you thinking $100 for a pair of swordtails, you don't need to say it. I know I'm nuts.

Maybe see if a LFS can order those fish for you from there supplier?

That way if the fish didn't make it alive to the LFS you wouldnt have to pay for them.

Do they not have a guarantee? Most fish suppliers will refurbish you for any fish dead on arrival (they even have a cute little acronym for it, DOA); especially for expensive fish you can usually request one. It's a little besmirching on the part of the seller if they don't have one. :/

Hi Polardbear.
I keep killifish, and I bring species I like in from USA and Europe. On the USA side of things, aquarists/breeders will not send fish or eggs until the fall in States where the summer temps are too high. The risk (well it's not even a risk, it's a certanity that the eggs/fish will perish) is too great.
I would suggest to you to either approach a good reputible aquarist shop to bring the swordtails in for you or try to find a livebearer association in your country, there is bound to be someone in their membership who has already got the fish you mention and are breeding them. To you the cost will be minimal compared to what you were going to pay.
I hope this was of some help
Regards
