we've just got ourselves a beautiful 8 months old boy.. in his former home ( shar pei breeder) he was bullied by her main stud dog so had to be rehomed.. hes now understandably a bit nervous.
these dogs are known for there strong stubborn attitude and ill call it arrogance, but there must be a word that suites better .. so i need somewhere i can seek great advice :)

many thanks in advance x

I saw your post and pics on FB (a bit late to reply direct), but in my opinion Sheilagh.... These dogs were bred as a fighter hounds (hence the loose skin)and that in itself requires as much attention as any long haired dog (Afghan) would as they are very prone to skin diseases as e.g. skin excema may start within the folds.......

They need to be exposed to a wide range of people (all visitors) and they (the people) have to approach it with confidence, otherwise this dog can turn into a family protector and not desirable for when you get visitors.... (unless this is your intention).. (they are "line bred" from the Bull Mastiff by the Chinese, but I think the BM has a much better temperament)..... My opinion in a nutshell......

thanks Ludwig, i was counting on you :)

yes i read non stop over a few months before deciding that i wanted this breed. family ( well, home) protection, was a consideration but certainly not the ONE! in teh few days that we've had him hes become a different dog.. hes so loving.. as well as being arrogant, stubborn and nosey lol
visitors are no longer being growled at, but licked , my sister walked in this afternoon( door was open as kids were out playing-child saftey gate in place) with her yappy terrier and OMG! he was like a little baby all over again..but i have read that the 'nasty streak' can develop with age in these dogs..
the thing i have found ( just after he went to attack my 18 yo on there first meeting) that he would really rather be the one doing the approaching, and would rather do it off a lead! the day after that i muzzled him and had second thoughts :(
this evening i was confident enough to take him to the local country park and let him off the lead... it was raining heavy and thought no one would be about and this guy needs a chance..#29### me if he didnt rum off! well i looked for 10 mins then found him crying on the other side of a river, 2 other male dog walkers had met with him, and commented on his 'lack of confidence' silly me i felt sorry for him.. leashed him and when he walked so nicley as he had been 'rescued' i let him off again ( and he went again!!).... not once was there a sign off any aggression ( tho i guess that may have been luck)

i need the classes and forum to give him confidence, when ive seen him growl or go to attack, its always been nerves

as for the skin issues. yes i read about those, and the vaseline on the pads in snow.... im not looking to be an expert i just want a happy family dog
also to add. hes not been castrated as yet.. i was debating this as hes pedigree, and could possibly be put to stud, but .... gonna need to think further.

bull mastiffs are beautful, but i would have noooo confidence over such a big dog
end of the day its how they are treated, and not how they are allowed to treat us :)
shelagh xx
