Severum Stocking Help.

I think you have room for a pair of Kribs.

Are you sure your gallonage is correct? your dimensions seem more like a 55 gal tank rather than a 75 :S unless your talking US gallons

Edit: my bad i read it wrong.

Kribs are exempt from the 'dont mix' rule as there natural water requirments are closer to South American than most popular African Cichlids.

They do however appreciate alot of Rocks and caves, and have bright colours much like most African Cichlids, but after that the comparison ends, they are placid to the point where you can keep them with Neons, whereas most Africans are extremely aggressive and Kribs like a neutral to slightly acidic PH whereas most Africans like very hard water.

I just thought....why not keep a Angel? or a Festivum as your final Cichlid if you cant get hold of Kribs?

tank is def. 75 USG.

while we are taking about the tank:

i am prob going to remodel it for cichilds. the tank was orignally setup for tetras.
any suggestions?

also as i said i can get kribs but get no guarantee if i will get them alive. so i dont want to risk it.

i read angels would not make it in a semi-aggresive tank. festivum would prob. work but they are out of stock.

BTW
* i wanted to add 2 small plecos, like albino bristlenose or pitbull.

1 severum
1 blue acara
1 firemouth
8 rainbow fish
10 cories
* 2 plecos

Angels do good in my tank and are probably the most aggressive in there (my stocking list is in my sig)

I don't want to be a killjoy but I don't think anybody realised we were talking US gallons here so this may change your stocking a little...although I owuld probably go ahead with a Sev in that tank, alot wouldnt because its only about 58 Imperial Gallons.

Semi Agressive fish like Severums only really have the label 'semi aggressive' as when they breed they can get a bit nasty, most semi agressive fish lean towards peaceful rather than spiteful.

I think personally stick to your original stocking plan and don't add the extra Cichlid because once stuff is fully grwn your going to be very cramped.

Go with the Sev,Blue Acara,Firemouth then get about 6 Rainbows and 6 Corys and you should be ok.

Decor will be fine for now but you will need to start stripping it when your fish grow as they will need as much space as possible.

like i said this is a long term tank. i dont want to have to relocate anyone in the future due to space.

i could always leave out the rainbow fish, if it is getting a little close. i would still like to have the cories and the plecos. just as tank maintenance.

how about a compromise:

1 severum
1 blue acara
1 firemouth
8 cories
2 plecos

ok room for fully grown?

Hmm I don't know what to suggest, they say 55g for a solo Severum or 75g for a Severum + tank mates, when they say this, they mean Imperial Gallons, not US Gallons so this is where your situation becomes tricky.

Are you really sure you want a Sev?

You could have a foot long fish in there no problem but Severums have so much mass as well as length which means they need more space.

If I was you I would look at other possibilitys as your centerpiece fish, maybe a Geophagus Brasiliensis as I mentioned earlier, they are beautiful and more streamlined, also IMO better characters than Severums.

That or maybe have multiple medium sized Cichlids?

the sev is just what i was recommended to have, not etched in stone. i thought the 1 sev + mates was for USG.
maybe i have to start all over?

so if i leave out the sev. could i just sub in a pearl cichlid?

Yes because Pearls although long are nowhere near as robust as Severums.

Like mentioned before the witdth and depth of a Severum equates to the size of 2 maybe 3 Pearl Eartheaters even tho both grow to about a foot long.

Just make sure you get a male, the females are drab and ugly and only get to about 5"

As for the gallonage,i'm confused to,maybe somebody else can put us right on it.

i did check that 75 imperical gallons = 90 US gallons.

so maybe a 75 USG is too small for cichlids.

i find it odd that on liveaquaria for the sev. min tank size is 30USG.
something doesnt feel right.

Yeh the internet seriously screws facts up lol.

U'm hoping somebody will come and tell us which is correct.

I do know 30USG is nowhere near big enough for a Juvi Sev let alone a adult lol
