well another platy popped last night and she had quite a few fry! so now in a small breeding net i have 30+ fry in variuos stages of developement so im off out today on the search for a second hand tank.

am i right in thinking if i use some of the filter media fro my main tank in the new tanks filter, it will cycle quicker?

also what does a fry tank really need?

a few plants? some sand?

and most importantly, what size would be good? i was thinking 60L or so?

Ive never set up a fry tank, but I believe that you can leave it with no substrate - easier to clean. Maybe a few plants (silk/plastic) for cover.

Yep, use some sponges/media from your cycled tank to instantly cycle the fry tank when you need it. When not in use, just put the media back in the main tank filter until you need it again, same as with a QT tank. Or you can keep the filter going on the fry tank by the fishless cycle method if you prefer. Obviously if you have a problem in your main tank, ie Ich or something, probably best not to use its media? Im sure others will give better info on this for you.

I imagine that a 60L would be a bit big, but then again it depends on the amount of fry and the size they will get to before you can re-home them. I would go for 40L but its really down to your preference.

Hope thats some help :)
