Scat Fish

HI GUYS,

I AM NEW TO THE FORUM BUT I REALLY NEED SOME HELP. I BOUGHT A SCAT FISH VERY NICE ENTHOUSIASTIC BUT AFTER 3 WEEKS IT STARTED ACTING STRANGE SUCH AS STAYING DOWNTO THE BOTTOM OF THE FISH TANK AND 2 DAYS LATER DIED.
I HAVENT SEEN ANYTHING STRANGE IN MY TANK IS IT A DISEASE OR IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY FISH TANK.

JUST TO KNOW
I START MY FISH TANK ALMOST A YEAR AGO. I HAD SOME SHARKS, OSCAR, PARROT, PIRANHA, GOURAMIS AND THEY WERE ALL OK WHEN I BROUGHT 2 ZEBRAS ALL OF MY FISH START TO DIE AND I FIND OUT THAT THE ZEBRAS WERE EATING THEM SO I TOOK THEM OUT AND NOW I ONLY HAVE THE PARROT AND THE PIRANHA, I PUT THE SCAT FISH AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENT I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO... I REALLY WANT TO PUT SOME MORE FISH BUT IT SEEMS THAT NOWONE CAN STAY ALIVE IN THERE

Hi arapina; welcome to the forum!

Did you know that Scats are brackish water fish and need salt added to the water? This could be why it died.

Or it could have been a water quality issue; how often do you do water changes? Do you have some test kits to test your water, or can you take a sample to your LFS and have them test it and write down the results for you?

Do you know exactly what those 'Zebras' were; there are a lot of fish commonly called Zebra.

If you would like advice on what fish to put in your tank, we'd really need some more information; how big is the tank, how big are the Parrot and the Pirahna, what filtration do you have running?

If you can get back to us with those things we'll be more able to help you

No the salesman didnt told me that

I dont thing it was about the water cause i had change the water the previous day. i usually change it once every 1,5 month

No but i could try to find a picture for you sorry i dont know there scient names

My tank is 60cm x 30cm and 30cm tall. the parrot is small but for better picture i will try to upload a photo for you.

Apart from the scat that died what other fish do you have in your aquarium?

Sorry to say it. But those fish aren't really suitable for a tank that size. They will need a far bigger tank.
Also, not so sure about keeping a Piranha with the Cichlids. It can only end in disaster.

i wouldnt know, in cyprus as i see nowone knows exactly what is suitable for which tank...

they told me that this fish were ok and i have them for over 6 months and they are just fine (i talk about the parrot and the piranha)

i would love to hear your opinions and thoughts

And you blamed the zebras for eating the others??

yes becouse i saw them bite the others and when i remove them from the fish tank my alge eaters and the other fish are just fine.


The mane problem with the zebras is that they always eat first the alge eaters and then the other fishes

Yeah, I don't think your fish shop gave you good advice.
Have a look through the various sections on the forum (especially the species reference section), see what you like, and then ask questions about compatibility.
And I also think you should take the parrot and piranha back.

Yeah, I don't think your fish shop gave you good advice.
Have a look through the various sections on the forum (especially the species reference section), see what you like, and then ask questions about compatibility.
And I also think you should take the parrot and piranha back.

But why they are ok together and i want to put something else with them... lets say oscar that i use to have and they were fine together.

what is your opinion???

i will try to upload some photos from my fish tank tomorrow so you will have a better idea.

Look, I understand you want to keep these fish.
But a 60cm tank is just too small.
And Piranha are highly predatory. It really needs to be kept with its own kind in a much bigger tank.

They aren't ok together, as your initial posting has shown.

Sadly, you are overstocked. It shocks me that you have chosen to add potentially huge fish into your aquarium instead of something more suitable like a school of Tetras or something. Im sure the fish you currently have will be OK for the moment but you really ought to buy a tank around 55 Gallons or more to keep the fish you have. Also as its been pointed out, the 2 fish you have aren't really compatible.

thank you both maybe you are right. Do yo think that if i take the piranha back i can keep the parrot and start with some other fishes? my parrot is too small for now and i thing i can leave it. soory but i have them for more than 6 months and i really want to keep one of them
