Scary Unidentified Bug

Yeah its a cockachaffer (original spelling) or Maybug.

They do injure bikers/cyclists etc. as the pheromone gathering apperatus of the male actually blocks his vision quite dramatically.

The grubs are big, and feed on rotten wood, I'm not sure about the adult diet, they may not feed as such, as they are only active for a relatively short timespan and are quite ephemeral.
 
so they are a type of chafer beetle then
i know i have seen the over here in the UK
before there not on the small size for a
beetle like can you imagine been hit in
the face by one while been on the motor
bike that would hurt once got a wasp in my helmet
and the visor dropped down

anyway.... there was something like that round here but it had bigger antennas and it had white stripes going on the shell, very pretty... lucky i found it nearly dead so i kept it :D

Last night here was the invasion of may bugs, within the night until i went to bed at 3am, i counted around 15 maybugs crashing into our flats and landing on floor, there still there now, one was dead and made me laugh, as it was being carted of by four yes four ants, i got down on hands and knees, couldnt beleive what i was seeing, jesh ants are sooooo strong,give jeff capes a run for his money :lol:
