Scary Fish

Banjo Catfish are odd looking BUT you very rarely see them as they tend to bury in the sand.

Bristlenose are usually fairly easy to get hold of and if you get a pair you might just end up with babies too! :)

Khuli Loach tend to hide but they do look like worms (if you get the 'black' variety) or stretched bumble bees (the black&yellow variety) and are actually very cute.

I have a Zebra Eel that would fit in that tank, they tend to reach about 8" in aquariums and need live or frozen food but other than that would be a nice fish once the tank is well established.

Another very cool odd fish is the Spotted Climbing Perch (ctenopoma) they reach about 8" though and will eat smaller fish, I'm sure there is a smaller variant though.

hollyp0p, I have to laugh having looked at the link to curviers bichir, it suggests bosemani rainbows as suitable tank mates!

My bichir have a taste for rainbow fish having eaten 1 bosemani and 1 iranian red! they now live happy but separate lives LOL

oh dear....they need to rethink putting that up there then....it's not small by any means is it?!

My bichir are not full grown either - they were about 5" at the time, the rainbows were about 2-2.5"

I do however keep several gouramis with them without a problem...

strange....must have something against rainbowfish lol :p
i'm getting some praecox rainbows in a few weeks :)

Gosh I have to say bristlenose plec is winning the scary title in my mind so far. I'll bet my chances of ever finding one to buy within driving distance or figuring out how to otherwise get one is practically nil!! (being a beginner is truly hard because everything you learn simply leads to yet another question, sigh!)

Also, looking at the dwarf puffer makes me realize that of course "strange and weird" fits fluidly right in to the 11-year-old mind when looking for "scary"!!!

~~waterdrop~~
(ah, tarheel basketball and the superbowl on the same warm sunny weekend day..)

Wahey what do i win!? :hyper: or does it just mean i have the mind of an 11 year old?

for a single dwarf puffer you only need a 5g, they are TINY and can't really be mixed with any fish (shrimp and ottos and maybe small gobies?)

And yeah i agree with you, i used a few fish sites but none of the other ones have been as invited or have so many members willing to help! I think i've learnt everything i know from here and havnt even been here 6 months yet! (i think)

lol, you guys are giving me a victory today. My 11-year-old is BORED with exotic cannister filters and the fishless cycle. We have finally hit something to draw some interest. Looking at these pictures has been great! I guess the sharks are losing out to the plecs - must be that all the sharks really grow too big, is that true?

Well a RTBS or a Ruby shark could fit in a 29gal, its just that they get aggressive.

The rainbow and Red tailed black sharks usually grow to around 5", If the tank was lightly stocked with maybe a bristlenose and one or two others it may work but due to the sharks territorial nature it is best to keep them in a tank of 50G or larger
