erm, yeah, its up to you mate, theres no right or wrong, just whichever one you think would be easiest for you and the fish you do, as i say, theres no right or wrong. Do you want to move them and then put sand in, and not move them or put sand in. the latter sounds easier but you have to think of the fish, as i say, i personally would remove the fish, but different people have different opinions, and (i think i speak for everyone here) i respect that.

I did a change over the other day from a sand/gravel/rock mix and definitely move the fish. The gravel will have a lot of detritus in it and severely cloud your water even if you're good about doing gravel vacs.

Also make sure you have the filter turned OFF as well as anything else that might suck up sand or be affected by it during the transition. Be ready to do a few large water changes too if you have particularly dirty water.
