Sand Or Gravel?

i have a mix about three quarturs gravel an one quarter sand so my fish get the best of both worlds

sand all the way for me, though I changed my filters penguin 150's to fluval 1 and 2 because of impeller damage

I started my tank about 5 years ago with gravel, had no end of trouble Paid a fortune on plants which kept dying. I was advised to go with finer gravel. again spent a fortune. and then switched to fine sand.Plants are healthier, and multiplying . It looks wanderful and defenetly more natural. and the corys are happier. it is also cleaner as the waste does not just sink under the gravel.You do have to be careful when using magnetic glass cleaners, I got a bit of sand on mine when cleaning and scratched the front of my tank.

i have sand on my main tank and recently got blue gravel for the tank in my room what was i thinking??? one thing i like about the gravel is that its easy to clean but apart from that u gotta love sand set-ups

I voted mix.

I have gravel in my betta tanks because the bettas hate filters, so I need to do really frequent water changes. Sand would be too hard to clean.

When I get my 55g for Christmas I plan on going for sand though.

Ive only got 1 tank, my first, and ive used sand. It looks fantastic compared to gravel and the fish seem to like it. I do however HATE cleaning it. Most of the muck on the top doesnt get sucked up the cleaner unless i push it into the sand in which case lots of the sand gets sucked up too. I think im gonna have to buy a spare bag of sand to top up with.

Yeah, that's my main worry about getting it. Anyone got any pointers on cleaning sand?

I just changed to sand 2 weeks ago, and my friends came over and said, "you got a new tank didn't you?" I kept saying I just changed to sand, and they said, "Stop lying, how much did the tank cost?"
