I am wondering what is the the general favourite base for a fish tank and what is easier to keep clean etc and what looks better please help bakerboi...
Corys preffer sand, when kept on gravel their barbels can get erroded by the constant contact with a rough substrate.
Sand all the time for me, all my tanks apart from the one in our sons bedroom have sand and the only reason that one still has gravel is because i dont want to disturb the root systems of the plants to change it.
Sand every time, it looks better, the fish seem far more active picking food from it and since most of my fish come from rivers that tend to have a sandy bottom rather than rocks, I like to think that it is more natural.
that was one of my worries bits of sand always floating around that wont setttle!
could you tell me how you put that german sheherd and horse pic under ur name i want to personalise mine
I also recently switched over to sand. It wasnt that hard to do, it just took a lot of time. All my fish made it through the change and are a lot more active and happy. Most of the fish I keep all like the sand, so it was a must for me. I have seemed to figure out how to clean the sand with the gravel cleaner siphon thing, but I still lose a little sand.
Like everyone says, it depends on what type of tank you are going for B)
The sand will settle plenty quick enough if you rinse it.
While you don't see the muck on the surface of the gravel like you do with sand, it's still there in a gravel tank rotting away at the bottom of the tank.
Most plants will still grow ok in sand and if you plant heavy enough you'll never see the muck that can settle on the bottom of the tank. All my tanks are planted, and they all have sand.
