Rope Fish / Reed Fish

Any one have experince with these?

What i have found so far is min 200L, can get out of small holes not to housed with small fish anyting else?

My tank 350L

15 Congo Tetra (3")
10 Rabora (2")
1 Appisto (3")
8 Sterbai (1")

How many rope fish you think i try in there?

Rope fish shouldn't be kept with small fish...

Also, if they try an gobble up a corydoras (sterbai) the locking fins on the catfish will probably result in the loss of both fish...

Your current stocking isn't suitable for rope fish.

Is that because their both bottem dwellers or the size? as i just rechecked the sterbai are fair size now 2-3" lol not sure why i put 1

one of the best oddball type fish. I had 4 for a couple of years the biggest being about 18 inch and quite thick in girth compareed to the young seen in the shops.

always active, very attractive in a plain kind of way easy to feed.

the bad point is they excape through the smallest of gaps. Having kept them I think a adult cory would be fine as long as well fed but thats not a guaranteee they;d not try just my opinion

Thanks simon, yeah i liked the fact they were different and i spent a good few hours on google but not alot of info out there. Some people say there not as aggresive as once thought but will eat small fish like neons and the like. I guess all i can do is try them. My LFS is great they take back fish and give a refund if there any bother like they did with GBR's and Appisto's.
On the Rio 350 the top is flat with only the holes for externals, i however run 2 Tetratec 1200's so each cut out id filled with the input and ouput and i had to squeeze them in anyway so i belive them to be ok. I did read they can live 10-15 years so maybe if i get some smaller ones they may grow up in the tank?

The Congo Tetras should be ok.
But I think the Ropes might eat the others.

I have 4 Ropes at the moment. Really unsual and fascinating to watch.

Are they active during the day? some some sies say they only come out when its dark? My rasbora are huge its the sterbai that worry me.

Mine were active at all times and they look ace swimming through the mid levels

Saw five lovely Reed Fish this afternoon in Cadnam, first time I've seen them in the flesh, such a lovely graceful manner ... Even my better half wanted me to find out if they would work with my ABFs; Leopard Bushfish; Upside Down Catfish; Pyjama Synodontis in the Rio240! These ~10" specimens were £13.50 a pop, no idea how that price compares.

Not a fish I know that much about at all, but am I right in thinking these are tricky to get competing for food with tankmates, a little like Fire Eels?

Those are the spines I'm on about, most corydoras species can lock their pectoral fins for the same effect as the spines (to lock them into crevices, or make them a difficult mouthful to get a holdof). Unfortunately, if the rope fish takes a fancy tone, and manages to catch it, it may get stuck in his mouth/throat, and they could both suffocate.
