Hi, i'm going to setup my RO unit tomorrow, i have space to store 25/50litres of RO water at the moment, im not on a meter so the waste water will go to the drain and i haven't setup a feed off (before the membrane) for HMA water yet (although i may try this at a later date).

my question is, what would be the best mix, i undestand mix with de-chlorinated tap water...which i will be doing this weekend. But i suppose the end product would be better if i added minerals instead.

what is the best mineral additives?

i want to keep Angelfish, Cardinal tetras, pleco etc so need to keep soft water and try to get my PH from 8 down to 7ish.

has anyone Tropic Marin Pro Discus Mineral? is this just for Discus?

cheers

Well if you figure it out I'll be interested to see. I keep meaning to study Tom Barr's site to try and completely understand what his little concoction is that helps to bring water that is too soft back up to something that starts in that minimal range of sweetness for most plants. He's got a name for it but I forget it at the moment. I've always wanted to really understand what it's made up of and what all the options are for making it yourself or obtaining in, depending on which continent you are on.

You may not have the same goals as me for your re-constituted water (mine involve the fact that a lot of plants need a certain minimal amount of GH and KH (actually each species needs certain amounts of many of 17 overall nutrients, so it's hopelessly complicated and we ignore it on that level) and my KH is zero and my GH pretty low.)

if you cut tap with RO, the water will return, eventually, to its original PH. its a falisy that you can cut in this way. it just does not work.
you will completely need to rebuild the RO water, to your requirements, much as marine keepers do.

Let me give my own response to adjusting RO water. There are many products that can be used to adjust RO water's mineral content to mimic natural water systems. I once used RO Right, a product available in the US, for exactly that purpose. More recently I have recognized that minerals existed in my raw tap water. The existence of minerals in my tap, water has led me to do a little math and determine what tap water to RO water ratio will give me the ideal mineral content of the final water mix. Although my water always has about the same pH as the tap water, I have found that the final mix always seems to reflect the pH of my tap water. Where does that leave me? I ignore the stated final pH requirements of fish and use the simple mineral content of my fish as my criterion. Both my fish and my plants seem to thrive when I get their mineral content right, even with my tap water extreme pH considerations.
