Rip Apistos X

I think the 50% w/c every other day are a bit extreme and I don't see how they are beneficial, unless you were doing a fish-in cycle?

To be fair with a good enough mature filter and decent water changes per week, the good bacteria in the filter should be able to handle the waste produced by your stock. Also you do not have a heavy stocking, or any major waste producing fish either.

I think the quantity of water changed and the amount may have caused a pH fluctuation which is what has killed off your fish. Just my opinion, of course.

For future reference my tank is steady at a Ph of 8 and my apistos have been fine for 3 months. So Ph might not be the problem. Sorry for your loss that is frustrating but try to figure out what is going on to prevent it next time. Best.

Most fish will be OK in a steady pH, the trouble comes from an unstable pH - one that fluctuates. This can be caused by large water changes when your tap water pH is different to your tanks :good:

It is strange, that's for certain, sorry for your loss, fingers crossed you have no more

Could the apistos have brought a very nasty disease into the tank? i.e. something that could affect the other fish and kill them in 2 days?

What is the difference between your tank water and tap water, i.e. with 2 big water changes over two days would the tank pH/KH etc have swing quite a bit? I'm thinking this could be the cause...but only just....

That's what I'm thinking as well.

pH is the same from tap to tank, no difference, if there was, i am sure that my khulis and corys would have died a while ago  although, i do test the ph from the tap before a water change and then later on in the day, after a water change, there was no difference.

i was dosing 1ml per 50ltrs of the carbo (forgot to ad that in a previous post). I have read that some people have experience rapid breathing with their fish, once this is added, for an hour after, also that glutaraldehyde can be lethal is overdosed. maybe i overdosed without realizing but i'm sure i didn't.

maybe i won't ever know and it will be left as one of those horrid 'fish keeping moments'

I really do want apistos, do you think it will be ok or bad of me, if i waited 5-8 weeks and then got another 3 apistos, qt'd them and tried again?

Something must be wrong, and I doubt it was the Easycarb.

What filtration do you have?

i got a stingray, a sponge box filter and a sponge filter, all 3 together should be fine. but i have a new filter on order, since monday

also when are you dosing the easy carbo if your dosing it not long before lights out the fish could have suffocated as plants dont take in c02 at night

easycarbo was dosed around midday, water surface movement is very good, sponge filter outtakes act like airstones, makes alot of surface movement

You say sponge filter, what do you mean? One of the Algarde ones powered by an airpump?

Really you'd be better off taking all those little filters off and replacing it with one much better external.

ETA: I used to have a Stingray and really it is only suitable for very small tanks. It was sold with my 60L, but really better suited to under 40L tanks.

Why were you doing 50% waterchanges every other day?

i was doing 50% water changes as i have the sponge filters, i put they sponge filters in, to work along side the stingray, until my proper filter turned up. Sponge filters, alongside the stingray will work just aswell, as long as the water pump is the right size but water changes would need to be kept up and regular.

I should have my new filter tomorrow or monday, fingers crossed! i would love an external but i'm worried that my toddler son would too
