Have just taken delivery of a Rio 400. sugestions for the filtration side please. is it advisable to use the in situe system combined with an eheim wet & dry. also do you recomend a u/g filter ? if not what sand depth do you advise. will also be incorporating a protien skimmer.
Fish only tank
its 20 years since I last kept marines.

Lot of Questions. Why don't you fly me over and I'll help you set it up??

Under gravel filters,(plenums), aren't too poular anymore.

Deep sand beds have been known to fail after a period of years, but it is the way I go.

I know Diddly about the Rio systems, so maybe one of the UK guys can help out a little here.

If this topics still open the juwel rio 400 is what im getting but were never ment to hold marines so the filters and lights you get are not up to running marine ( if you look in a juwel brochure all the pics are tropical ) whem i get my one it will be drilled for a sump.

I have a Juwel as one of my reef tanks. Although the internal filter is not designed for marine stups they are good for holding very substancse for treatment of water. ROWAPHOS, Carbon, even just floss or sponges. And also its extra circulation for the tank. Considering a reef needs a minimum of 10x tank volume turnover per hour, this is a good bit of free extra circulation.
Should you decide to remove the internal filter, you will soon find that you will probably require an external for such treamtents. Its also nice ot have the heater hidden fromview inside the Juwel filter. I have seen the damage a heater can do to snails that are on a heater that decides to turn on

Of course, if you opt to drill the tank then this changes everything. Adding a sump will give you all sorts of options on tank setup and filtration.
