I have a 60 gal. tank with a Rena XP3. I think I want to get some Discus. How/what should I layer my baskets with? I have foam in the bottom, ceramic rings in the bottom of the 2nd basket(1/2 full), & media balls for the top basket. Should I move the media balls to the top of the 2nd basket, & fill the 3rd with something else? I have extra foam, carbon, Phos-Zorb (removes phosphate & silicate), Nitra-Zorb (removes ammonia, nitrite, & nitrate), & Zeolite (ammonia remover).... Is any of this useful?

Hi FOS and Welcome to the beginners section!

If you are indeed new to the hobby, I hate to say it but I'd suggest you think long and hard before trying to take on Discus as a first thing. They are usually done in a species tank and can be quite a challenge.

The media layers sound pretty good. The extra chems you mention the -zorbs, are not needed.

I would go ahead and fill the filter with the rest of your sponges in the bottom tray and bio-media in the other two trays. I run my XP3 with the coarse sponges in the bottom followed by the finer sponges. The middle tray and top tray both get biological media. To top everything off, I use a thin polishing pad, like the one that comes with the filter. My current favorite biological media is Seachem Matrix, it sort of looks like ceramic pebbles, but I have lots of other media that I have used in my filter over the years. One of the cheapest good biological media is pot scrubbers like these ones that I also have used in my XP3.

Just always be careful of any new potscrubbers you buy that they are not packed in liquid soap or have some sort of soap or something impregnated in them. WD
