Saw a couple of super red sevs at the store today for 10 dollars. Are these hybrids or are they found in the wild if anyone has any info on them that would be great. I also heard they are hard to breed as males are often sterile making me think they are hybrids. I think im just going to get two green sevs for my tank but would like to see all my possibilities. Are they more sensitive to water conditions then gold and green sevs.

When you mean Red severum do you mean this.

If thats the fish they are line bred and normaly are $20 or more. So $10 is a good price.

If the ones at the store are really really red they were given hormones this is a redone why they are hard to breed hormones can mess with a fish reproductive orgrans. They are also so inbred that is another reason why they don't spawn well. Also sexing them is very hard and it is said most are males.

I personaly think the green severums are so pretty they shine are colorful I have both and if I could only keep one my green severum Nip would stay.

What size tank do you have?

Yup, line-bred colour variant. NOT a hybrid.

Often sterile but, in my experience, just as sturdy as your average shop-bought green sev.

I'm not convinced that all really red ones are given hormones. I had a really quite red male for many, many months and he grew well, and retained his lovely colour. As I understand it, hormone-treated fish supposedly fade quickly once withdrawn from those hormones.
I am not really convinced of the widespread use of hormones in the trade. Lots of rumour, and little concrete evidence that I have seen (certainly in the UK) of their use.

I think hormones helped.

I have a 125 gallon tank, i have a pair of uarus and severums are my favorite fish so i was thinking about getting at least two greens probably four at juvenile age. Hopefully i can breed them when they mature and pair off. I had a breeding pair but the batches never panned out right. The fry would die for mysterious reasons probably eaten. And then the female died a year or two later. My green severum was never the same without her and i couldn't find a big enough mate for him at the lfs. The female was a gold and the male was the green. The super reds are nice but i think im going to stick to greens so i am positive they wont be sterile. I think they beat out the reds anyway with their blue yews to their face.

I also saw red head severum are they a natural strain???

If you are referring to the Rotkeil severum yes as far as I am aware, I think you can get wild caught...

Star4 has a breeding pair, where my juvies came from

And lots of babies  sometimes also called red shouldered severums.

I also have 2 red spot severums, Harry who is very red and Vinny who is slightly more orange than red.

Thanks with all these new variations it can get confusing to realize if its just hormones or wild strains. When i go back to the lfs om going to pick up whatever i see in my opinion they all look stunning.

HAHA I have a 2 year old that likes to stay up late. So I don't sleep like normal people. I also only work part time right now so I have lots of time on my hands haha.

Yeah the Greens and Red head severums are really pretty with lots more color and shine. Reds are just cool looking.

You have 2 uarus and how many Severums. I would just have 2 uarus with 2 Severums no more. When you have a breeding pair that adds Drama to the tank.
