I got a new male Betta on October 31st. When I got home I noticed he had a small red patch on the front of his fave between his eyes. Since then it has gotten darker in color (still red), and looks bigger. To me it looks like there arent any scales there, but Im not 100% certain. The rest of his face is black/blue besides that spot. He does have some red colored fins so Im not sure if the red patch on the face is just color?

Im on my phone and it wont let me copy and paste the form to fill out for emergencies... but the tank eas just cleaned before I got him and Ive done one 25% water change so far. So all parameters are good. I have fairly hard water, like 150-180 mg/L. I added one dose of Herbtana incase he has any parasites or something. I also ise Topfin conditioner along with API stress coat. Aqueon plant food is used for the live plants. Three Mystery Snails also live with him. Oh, and he's in a 10g tank.

He did look fairly bloated when I first brought him home but that seems to have cleared up. He's and active swimmer, very curious, and eats well.

If you need to know anything else just ask. Thanks so much!

What are your water parameters.

Have you got soft or hard water
What is the temperature of the water
How often to you change water

Ammonia: .25
Nitrite: 1
Nitrate: 5
Very hard water
About 78 degrees F
Once a week, unless parameters are bad.
I use Aqueon Plant Food, TopFin water conditioner, and API Stress Coat

I know the Nitrite is quite high. I've been doing about 50% water changes until it goes down.

If it looks like patches of blood under the skin, it might be Costia - a parasite. Salt dip &/or high temp treatment *may* help (same as for treating ich). External anti-parasitics (like quick cure) or better yet - an antiparasitic food are options.

Ok heres some thing that needs looking at

Both these levels are toxic to fish the only safe level is zero. You need to do more water changes.

What do you mean by about? Do you have a thermometer and heater?

API Stress Coat
I do not use or recommend this product.

Thanks! I'll try these.

I have been doing 50% water changes now and more frequently.

Yes I have a heater and thermometer.

Why do you not recommend it?

The reason that it isn't recommended is due to the fact that Aloe Vera is an active ingredient in it.
It allegedly coats the fish and protects it, but the fish's natural mucus (slime coat) should be doing this for it. Mean while, aloe vera or any other plant juice is just adding more organic matter to the water that will decompose and become pollutants such as ammonia.
