Red Jewels

Hello again. I got a pair of red jewels a couple of months ago, I got them from a reliable LFS and they tell me they dont grow that big (3" or so). But they'v already duobled in size. I have the space for them, would just like to know how big they grow.

They're old world African cichlids mate. They can reach about 4"

I'm sure they get bigger about 6"

Mine stayed around 4" in a 180 litre 3ft tank. Maybe they get bigger in a bigger tank?

Ah just read Liffalli (red) Jewels only get to 4", the normal turquoise looking ones get bigger

Yeah mine were blood red. Extremely colourful indeed. Just a shame their temperament and breeding habits let them down.

Mine is about 5inch right now in a 75g.

You gonna warn him Minnnt? Oh well, I guess I will do it.

If you choose to stock other fish with your Jewels, be very careful and watch your tank closely. Jewels are evil little turds that will terrorize everything. I found mine likes upside down catfish She tries to kill almost everything else.

Solo Jewels are ok tho, my mate has one in with Severums, Parrots etc

Yeah I have tried different things with my jewel. I didn't want to mention severums as I was surprised its working in my tanks. I have a green and a gold severum, and an upside down catfish in with my jewel. She has tried to kill everything else. Heck, she tried to kill the sevs a couple of times. I wouldnt dream of trying a mated pair in a tank with others lol

My red Jewel is around 4 inches and fairly stocky. I bought her in March and she was well under an inch. She is gorgeous and has lots of personality

Cheers for the replies and advice. I have a breeding pair that are doing the deed as i type. But their the smallest fish in the tank next to the odessa barbs. Their in with 4 large severum, red parrot, silver dollars, bichir, catfish and plec. Think it would be an idea to split the pair and maybe just keep the male (he seems to be the calmer and better looking of the 2)?
