So i recently bought three Jack Dempsey for my plunge back into fishkeeping... I am pritty sure the darker fish is a JD but the two others are very similar to green terrors, can anyone help me ID these?

Thanks for any replies!

The first one is a Texas, looks the same as mine when they were young so say its a Herichthys carpintis, should be an ok tankmate for a JD :good:

The top one looks like a Texas cichlid to me, could be a Green Terror though too. Wheres star4 and hamfist when you need them
The bottom one is definately a Jack Dempsey though

Here is a pic of my male Electric Blue JD and the second pic is my female normal JD. Bear in mind they can change colour vastly from adults to juvis much like an oscar does

:p Beat you to it James

tnhowery you have to keep us (me!) updated on your JD growing up. Too few people seem to keep them, and those who do keep quiet, JD's are my passion in life :)

Well I would have one if yours hurry up and get jiggy with it

tnhowery, if there is anything you want to know about Texas (the fish never been to the states  ) I'd be happy to help if I can. :good:

Ooooh Lesley, i perhaps should of pm'd you.

My dempseys spawned last night. Gotta be well over a few hundred eggs on a big ol piece of slate. Shes fanning like mad, so fingers crossed yes. You'll be first to know as promised ;)

Wow not what i thought it was but okay so it seems i hae bought two texas cichlids and a JD lol thanks for the many replies and i will definately keep you all updated this is my wifes tank btw, i have mine on the salty side but will be sure to update!

:good: I dont feel such a lonely texas keeper now

Are the texas okay to keep with the JD my wife is getting rather annoyed watching the bigger texas chase everything around the tank lol

They can be quite brutish unfortunately and JD's from my experiences with the few i have kept is that they are rather more timid than the aggresive brutes they are made out to be. Not sure on the long term compatability, certainly as the Texas' get bigger. However, as with alot of fish if they are grown up together as juvi's then there is a possibility they will get along.

Remember if they are new to the tank they will bicker for a while whilst they sort out the natural order of things in their new home :) Most likely with the JD being bottom of the order haha

The JD seems to be in the middle of the three lol, the larger texas is the king right now, then the jd and the smaller texas is at the bottom of the list, my wife is now aggrivated with the lfs and considering taking them back as she doesnt like the aggresion, but she has also fallen in love with the fish lol. This being her first tank of her own she gets to clean the sand and do a water change tonight lol my hands are full with the saltwater of my own... Guess we will see how this goes.

Ditto james, from that size growing up together they "should" be ok My Texas grew up with severums and are smallest 6" biggest 8" trouble with cichlids is you can just get a grumpy one, the chasing is most likely the bigger fish letting the others know who is boss.
