Quiet External Filter To Replace Current One

On my 50g I have an Aquis CF1000 which is a good filter, however on our wooden floor it is incredibly noisey. We have tried fiddling with it, its on polystyrene etc but it's still humming.

Anyone got any recommendations for a GOOD filter, which is QUIET for less than £80 (or could try and find 2nd hand but ideally new)?

The Tetratec ex1200. I have three running in my living room, all excellent. Been using them for years. Easy to clean and change media when needed and the only noise I hear is from my air pumps. I have one running on my 55g along with a tiny internal I keep running for emergencies (I prefer to have more than 1 filter on the larger tanks, just in case). It's set to give a good flow rate across the tank and looks like a running river at the top, which aerates the water nicely. The other two run my 125g along with my ancient eheim professional external. Also a good filter but a great deal more expensive!

Edit: It's slightly over the £80 mark but warehouse aquatics have it for £83.95 on their site.

Eheim 2217+, less than £80 new (online, warehouse aquatics) very quiet once air is expelled. Rated for much higher sized tanks, upto 600L, so you could go for a smaller version, 2215/2213, but with not much difference in price, I would go for the higher rated. Great filters, wouldnt use anything else now.

I have a credit with an online company, so need to order from them really. They have the Eheim 2215 and the 2217 (not the +, what's the difference?) including media on there. The 2217 is £20 more, so I'd have to add £30 more to my credit, rather than £10 for the 2215.
Is it worth going for the 2217 over the 2215? I must say I have heard that this filter is recommended.

the + means it comes with double taps, a must for filter maintenance, otherwise you have to re-prime it everytime you need to open it up, plus the taps stop water leaking when you want to move it for maintenance. No other difference, you could always buy the taps seperately on ebay or similar. Double check with the company you are buying from, some places just dont add the + to the description, if it says complete with double taps, then its the + model anyway.

A 2215 is sufficient for a 50g tank

Do you need an airpump to operate an external filter? Sorry to butt in but I know nothing about them atall and am interested.

Cool, just read a little more. It says they both come with filter pads and double taps.

The 2215 is 620L p/h and the 2217 is 1000L p/h.

I have Rainbowfish who appreciate a nice clean tank, so maybe the 2217 would be better?

Personally I would always go for the higher rated, only ever used the 2217's even on a 30g tank. But it depends on what you can afford

Well I am swaying towards the higher rated as I would prefer to overfilter Not a big difference in price really, either.

The company who are giving me these points are messing me about royally. I sent the product back for a refund, they said I will have to have points, though today the plot thickens as it seems they didn't realise it's faulty as they haven't even tested the #41#### thing yet Despite several phone calls and me telling them it's faulty I am going to push for a cash refund as don't want to use this company again, so maybe be able to get it cheaper elsewhere.

I will make sure it comes with the taps though, gosh can't imagine having an external without taps The boyfriend is going to love plumbing in the new filter with me

Unfortunately not. Our old house was floor boards covered with carpet. Our new house is proper concrete solid floor (good for tanks ) with wood effect flooring. A bit of carpet under it isn't going to make any difference as its still on concrete.

My FX5 hums at bit as well to be fair, but we do need to add a little more media to 'beef it up' a bit. May be some air trapped still as well.

The combination of both though is a constant annoying hum - a quiet filter is what I want!
