Drained my tank out to put play sand in it!.. no matter how many times i rinse the sand its still dirty!!!

Can i just put it in and let it settle/filter???

Yeah u can but give it a few more washes. What my father done was put the sand in a pillow case in the bath and run the water inside the pillow case and mixed it up the dusty stuff came out his settled really quick then

I just rinsed and rinsed and rinsed mine until it seemed decently clean and then I put it in the tank and did my best to vacuum out all the floating bits. Remember to put a plate at the bottom of the tank, on top of the sand when adding the water back in, otherwise the water will stir up the sane and make it a total mess.

Thank you for fast reply ..and yeah i have it in a pillow case and im rinsing it in a bucket as i live in my girlfriends dad's house and dont think he will let me do it in the bath Lol.. just about got away with doing it in the sink at first!

Will carry on rinsing a couple more times then will put sand in the tank do you think it will settle before tonight?

it will settle instantly the more you clean it, i swirrled my buckets of playsand around about 20 times and drained off the dirty water until it ran clear. Put the effort in now for a better result.

Agree with tizer. If you really rinse it properly it won't cloud your tank, beyond possibly a very slight 'milkiness'.

The trick is to be really ruthless about pouring away any sand that dosn't sink within a couple of seconds, even if you lose a bit of 'good' sand along with it.

Once it's clean, you can stir it up as much as you like and it will settle very rapidly in the bucket. Then you know it's done

I found that putting no more than 4/5 inches at the bottom of my 15l fish bucket per multiple rinsing helped, even then it was taking a good 5+ buckets of water to get the sand dust free.

wash wash the sand all day wash wash the bits away. take your time you get there in the end god luck

As everyone has said, the trick is to just be ruthless about rinsing it. There's just no other answer. When you see absolutely no dusty stuff floating around your rinsing water, then rinse a little more.

NO!! Those tiny particles will beat up your filter. Wait until everything has settled before using your filter.

Sand and water in.. little bit merky but by fare cleaner than i thought it would be!.. Even tidied up most of my mess and have 15mins spare before the girlfriend comes home from work!

I think its time for MW3 now!!!

You shoudnt use play sand tbh unless you can garuntee its free from salt? Do you have a tropical tank or marine? Pets at home do a really good gravel. You can get 8kg for a tenner. It took 12 kg to fill up my 260 litre tank. No matter how much you clean your substrate. I.e sand or gravel. It will always be cloudy. You should google the term new tank syndrome and cloudy tank water. You need to treat your tank with the appropriate chemicals. I.e chlorine remover ect. So just to cap off. Its normal for tanks to go cloudy to begin with. You can not add fish for atleast 2 weeks. And afyer that you will need to test the water using tetra ph 5 in 1 test strips to make sure youbate free from nitrates anf you have a good ph level. If you need more help just ask.
