I've soaked a piece of bog wood in boiling water for 3 hours, emptied, added boiling water again and left overnight. It seems to have got the worst of it out and I'm looking to add it to the tank now.

I just wanted to double check that the tannins that haven't leached out yet won't harm the fish? I know they'll alter the pH but it shouldn't harm the fish, right?

No wont cause any harm to the fish at all. But if it does leak a little, as most bogwood does, you will have some yellowy water for a while, but as you know, water changes will eventually get rid of it. You could also add a little filter floss to clean some of it up.

I'm doing daily water changes at the moment on that tank, so not a problem. Cheers mate.

minxfishy is right -

i'm havin' trouble with my mopani wood as well - -
i've been treating it regulary with boiling water - -and still leachin' tanin
up to now - - i've heard that it won't cause any harm to your fish -
infact some fish might like it... water changes will fix your problem -

but it may take a while.

:good:

if it become 2 bad just a some carbon 2 the filter that will get the tannins out then just remove the carbon again, then when it happens again just repeat the procesdure :)

Tannins are good for most fish, The Bogwood/Driftwood/Mopani will always leak tannins into the tank water this will decrease over time, it WILL still leak tannins. As JenCilBee says adding some crabon to the filter can help remove them form the tank.

i'm using compact super in my tank and it got carbon in it..
seems not to be helping at the moment.. perhaps my
bog woods leaks hard to handle...

i tried putting it back a while ago -
and it made my water yellow "again"
so back to the bucket.. more boiling water treatment...

:hyper:
