Putting Canister Filter Through Mesh Lid

What do you recommend in regards to putting my canister filter through my wire mesh hood?

Cut a hole and bend the ends back?

do you mean just for the tubing ?
 
what about cutting a hole and then using a rubber grommet to ensure no sharp edges which could damage the tube.
