Bought a used 25 gallon aquarium that came with a Rena Filstar canister external filter.
It's worked fine for 3 days but developed a leak from the top of the filter and put about a gallon on the carpet.
Luckily I was there and noticed the water level had dropped.
Looking for recommendations for a new submersible filter.
Thank you.

The o-ring might have split on the external canister filter. These can be replaced relatively cheaply.

You can put the filter in a bucket or plastic storage container to trap any water if it leaks again before you get it fixed or replaced.

The o-ring was the first thing I checked. I used to have this same filter and a 90 gal several years ago. It leaked twice but I chalked it up to user error. The problem is they're not "foolproof" which may be one reason they're no longer sold.

Interesting. I thought the carbon was to help clarify the water.

Carbon's purpose is to remove medication when treatment is finished; to remove any odd smells which may develop; and to remove the brown colour which leaches from wood. Regular water changes will do the same with additional benefits, such as replenishing minerals which are used up in the tank.

Activated carbon's strength lies in its ability to adsorb non-polar or weakly polar organic molecules. These are the molecules that don't readily mix with water. These include humic acid, fulvic acid, phenol, tannins and pheromones and growth inhibiting hormones.

Did a little reading on it. Interesting stuff.
