Yes, it's the same stuff (ie, bloodworm or daphnia or whatever) except it's been freeze dried instead of frozen into a block.

I have always supplemented with freeze dried foods. I would like to know the science behind your lfs claim.

As far as I'm aware both freeze dried and frozen are fine, there are risks with live ones that they may introduce bacteria into the tank, but those risks are removed by the freezing/freeze drying processes.

I'm also unsure how accurately you would be able to prove that a fish had died from organ failure rather than anything else (bearing in mine average Joe Public's ability and inclination to perform a post mortem on a recently deceased small fish), and furthermore, how you would prove that it was the freeze dried food that had caused it rather than another factor such as poor water quality, bad genetics, bacterial or fungal infection, ammonia/nitrite poisoning, stress, being eaten - those being the most common causes of fish death. Attributing a causal link in those circumstances would be tentative at best.

Dried food sometimes causes internal problems because it can absorb water after the fish have eaten it, and it swell up inside them. Particularly if your fish are as greedy as mine.
The way round this is to soak the food in a bit of tank water before putting it in the tank. That way it absorbs the water before the fish eat it.
