I just got roped into doing a presentation on breeding egg laying fish. I have today and tomorrow to prepare, and will present Sunday.

What questions would occur to you if you were going to such a talk? What would you like to hear about if you were there? It's such a huge subject to narrow down.

What methods are there for preventing fungus on the eggs and which work best? Does it matter what method you use depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the water?
(Yes, example, there is some evidence with corydoras that eggs from species from blackwater environments are better prevented with tannins whereas clearwater and whitewater species respond better to methylene blue treatment)

This can really spoil a lot of egg laying breeders' goals for sure.

Methods of collecting and incubating eggs.
First foods for fry.
Conditioning foods for the breeders.
Tricks to stimulate spawning.
Whether it's better to keep males and females separated or together.

Any of the fish I think I have seen mentioned on here that take care of their eggs and then their fry - interesting, as well as those that just pop off and let them get on with it.

I was thinking about this while I was driving. I think there are 4 categories of egg layers. Egg scatterers, substrate spawners, mouth brooders, and those that lay adhesive eggs like in a spawning mop.

Plus rarer egg shooters, parasitic breeders, egg buriers, egg carriers, bubble nesters and internally fertilized egg layers. This is going to be a tough outline. I think I'll just pick a few species and keep it simple!

Excellent help so far!

I'm thinking Betta splendens for bubble nests. A Malawi for mouthbrooders. Kribs for cave spawners. Rams for open spawners. A killie for mops. A cory for adhesive mainly on the glass spawners. I only have 30 minutes or so...

Mentioning water parameters effects on the eggs is another topic.
An example would be Microgeophagus/rams laying eggs in 'hard or alkaline' water causing damage to egg membrane and impairing sperm function.
