I have just got a TetraTec Ex1200 that has been used but I'm not too sure if I need to do anything to make sure it's suitable for my tank before I use it. I was thinking about taking a bucket of water out of the tank and putting both the in and out pipes into the bucket for a few hours just to make sure everything is OK with it as well as testing the water before and after I add the new filter? Also not sure if I should get any or all new filter media before adding it to the tank?????

you should give it as much of a clean as possible. and you should replace the filter media too. especially if its carbon. it should be fine though
