I like the magazine but then i like colour pictures!!! If i want a good read i get my "private eye"....There forum loss is our gain eventually

LOL
well there you go. Stop stir sheeting and you won't get booted out :)

I've just had an "argument" on another forum. Someone is keeping a RTCxTSN in a 100gal. I mentioned that the adult size of this fish will probably be around 5ft, and told him it was cruel to keep the fish in anything under 10'x6'x6', and the tank should be around 15'x8'x6' for niceities.

All my posts were deleted and I was told not to "stir sheet".

Stupid.

Edit: he also has a giraffe catfish, motoro ray, giant gourami and a shoal of 10 cories...

Don't provide all the information will you!

And you were stirring. You were trying to give information on fish that are out of your depth!

Who gives a rip roaring rats ass if the kid's autistic or not.

a.) If he doesn't have the means, nor knowledge to care for his animals properly...I don't care how "soothing" it is for him - It's ignorant to treat certain members special because of disabilities ect.

b.) The real kicker...He has an illegal animal.

Illegal...meaning...It's...Illegal.... I don't care if he's the damn pope or dalai lama, he shouldn't have it. And I seriously doubt he 'has permission' to keep it. The government won't [shouldn't] bend rules just for the sake of one person. The fact that he's blatantly showing it off is even worse. The members of that forum need to climb a tree and get their heads out of their rumps.

The fact that they banned you because you were trying to HELP the guy is BS. To hell with them I say.

I have the sniffles, and watching fish soothes my sinuses, So for that reason I am going to be cruel to a fish and keep a ray in a 60litre.......Does that seem right...YOU DECIDE xd

You wern't even a member when it started.

That makes no difference.

I catch on surprising quick. And from the thread that got locked your just a typical kid that thinks they know it all because you read a bit on the net. What you lack is experience with the fish in question which counts for alot with bigger fish. Yeh, small fish you can pick up a book read there vital statistics and be done, but this doesn't work with big fish.

No need to get this thread wrecked as well though. Feel free to PM me instead on either forum.

Doesn't surprise me. I post mainly on here and lurk on a couple marine/reef forums but have never been particularly impressed by the PFK forum. One of the problems with any forum attached to a commercial site/product is that they are over moderated and don’t like to leave anything up there that would every annoying its customers or advertisers.

It's sad that in this case the over moderation will end up causing harm to animals (both to the animals this kid is keeping and to the animals others are going to keep due to the bad advice and information on the forums).

Autism is a crap excuse for animal cruelty (and at the moment seems to be a common excuse for people to act like complete twats and get away with it).

sorry autism does not give ppl the rite to break the law! I have disabilitys but i doubt the rspca or police would care if i mistreated my birds or fish

I don't get how having a 'calming effect' on a kid with autism has anything to do with it, how can a 3 foot fish splashing around in a tank too small for it to turn around in be calming? :S
Surely more calming fish for that tank would be some discus or a big planted community or something.

Ah well, it's their loss that they kicked off probably the most knowledgable member on preds off the forum, you're too good for them anyway cfc! :p Stick here with us! :D

hmmmm i'm a bit surprised about that, ok if the kid has autism you may need to take a fairly measured approach when you deal with the issues, go a bit easier than you would with someone else, but that doesn't mean you should avoid the issue altogether.

I think most disabled people will tell you one of the things they really appreciate is when people see them as a human not as a disability and don't just pander to them because of it but treat them as they would any other human being. Ultimatley most disabled people just want to be treated as a 'normal' (for want of a better word) human being.

In this specific case it's gonna depend where on the autistic spectrum the kid is weather they will even have any comprehension of their disability though. However assuming they are aware enough to be on the pc unsupervised and holding conversations I would suspect the above applies, if it doesn't then they'll probably be supervised on the computer so their parent/guardian should hopefully be reading what is said and can deal with the issues form there.

but i've always found pdk's advise on large fish to be a touch shabby. cases like in the Q&A page of the magazine, people writing in about large fish and the advice from the experts is, well, not what I would advise anyway.

However overall I like the magazine, but they are a general fishkeeping mag, I think on the basics they provide decent solid advice and interesting articles, but they are sometimes let down when they venture into more specialised fields of fishkeeping. except for plants where the advice seems to be pretty decent (Love ya George! :D lol)

I too used the PFK forums while this one was down (was me who made a thread asking when this one would be back up :p).

I find this forum to be the best that I have visited, not only because of the information within its pages but because of the community it attracts.

On the subject of the person with the large catfish, I have met him in real life (works at a LFS near me) and have heard of him on another forum (one that I don't go to often, and when I do its mainly to look at the pictures). He is a genuinely nice person. The issue of him keeping fish that will grow very large is a contraversial one, and one I hate to admit I have fallen foul of (to a lesser extent certainly eg. keeping a dat in a 90 gallon to grow it on). As long as the fish gets a good home that it deserves then I don't see a problem with this situation. Of course this is where the key lies, does the fish get a good home, personally I know I will never again buy a fish that may outgrow the tank I have currently got, no matter how sure I am that I can give it a good home if this situation arises.

He is a genuinely nice person.

sure he is, but this is the truthism that was mentioned before isn't it. oh because he's nice and he's disabled it's fine for him to do things which are ultimatley cruel to animals?

Yes, I see your point, and I agree that its no excuse, just that I said it because thats how he is to talk to.
