How big do they grow? I have been looking on the net this morning, some sites say 5" some 6" one has even said 8-10"???

have had them up to
6 to 7 inches in the past
but have heard of the them
been bigger or smaller

Mine looks as though it will max at 6-7" (edit: put 8 before for some strange reason), but I think there are a couple of varieties out there, another fish with a catch all name that is in fact a few...Cichlasoma portalegrense (mostly called port acara) or Cichlasoma bimaculatum (sometimes called black/brown or port acara)
Some picks of what I think is either: http://www.fishforum...my-new-arrival/
