Pleco/catfish For 40 Liter Tank?

hey all

is there any plecs/catfish that would go in a 40 liter tank, it cant be corys as im having black gravel not sand =/ oh and no BN's i have those in another tank

Hara Jerdoni or some bumblebee catfish should work in there

apparently corys are fine on gravel as long as it isn't sharp enough to damage their barbels.

oh wow Hara Jerdoni are so bizzare i love them! are they rare cant say i have ever seen any in my fish shops

and thats good to hear about corys i really like those as well

Hara jerdoni are just uncommon not rare. In my LFS, I think they are £4.00 or less

i think ill keep a eye out for those then i really like them if i cant find those ill go for a type of cory (undecided so far) or if anyone else has suggestions please put them up i may like them

No plecos that I know of are good for a 40 litre (~10gal) tank. They all get too big and create way to much waste. ONE South American bumblebee catfish would be okay. As has been stated, cories will be fine with gravel, as long as it isn't sharp, just make sure you do one of the smaller species, like pygmies or pandas (I would normally say albino/bronzes/peppereds, but I just recently aquired some almost 2.5" albinos and four of those zooming around a 10gal tank would be FRIGHTENING! They use every available centimeter of my 55gal).

For a small tank I think if you are going to go cory route then it would be dwarf corydoras or aspidoras but if you want to go the catfish route then I would go with either the Hara jerdoni like has already been mentioned or one of the Microsynodontis species which are really nice or something a bit rarer Laguvia shawi which are a temperate species from India, I think there are a couple of L-numbers that stay pretty small and would work also

Hara Jerdoni are a worse choose than corys for gravel IMO. They spend alot of time burred and gravel wont do them any good at all. They really seen sand IMO. Maybe 3 upside down catfish.

I dont think any Lnumber plecos or infact any Microsynodontis are suitable for a 40 litre tank.
Dwarf Cories are an option as most of the time, they are hovering above the substrate, but when they aren't, they forage like mad so....
Basically anything under 2.5 inches should be fine.
Have you considered Bumblebee Goby?

The Haras in my LFS rarely bury themselves in the sand, though I agree in that they are very inactive during daytime

if i provided the haras with small crevices and caves wouldnt they just hide in there instead of the gravel?

Are you sure there haras then? Pretty much all the ones ive ever seen have been atleast slightly buried in the sand. I really would avoid them same as other types like Bunocephalus and Akysis they all need sand IMO even though alot of people say they do fine in gravel i would never even think about keeping them in it.

Bumblebee gobbies could work but if there are other fish in the tank there likely to get bullied out of food.

Is there a reason you cant change to sand? It would make stocking bottom dwellers alot easier.

2 reasons really

1 i got the black gravel

2 black sand costs f loads xD

i can go without a bottom dweller if none really fit the bill i would rather have happy fish than unhappy fish that look nice

so if none really would fir the bill then just say i wont be offended

Fair enough. If its smooth gravel then 6 pygmy corys or 3 upside down catfish would work.
