Today at work a female work chum told me her tank was still lightless after nearly 5 months, and that she'd concidered turning the filter off and leaving them. Her husband refused to let her and promptly turned the filter back on. However, he wanted to take the fish outside and use a brick on them to get rid. Upon hearing this today i was horrified, so...i offered to take them if she wanted to get rid. She agreed.

So i promptly popped over this afternoon and picked up her 4 fish. The other 3 were x2 Angels (one with SEVERE bloat), and a big, BIG moonlight gourami. The other i'm completely baffled by, and thus i'm posting it here because she said she had 2 angels, and 2 gouramis. Well it has the face of a gourami, but the body nothing like i've ever seen on a gourami and i think it could be a cichlid of sorts.

Well they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so enough waffle from me and more IDENTIFATING :hey:

Please someone ID this fish. Its about 5-6" long and i've never seen anything the likes of it. When she said she had 2 gourami's and this was one of them i panicked i had inherited a Giant Gourami :look: I mean it doesnt have the feely bits that Gourami's have, instead it has pectoral fins. So is it a Gourami, or some sort of cichlid? I'm really quite stumped by this one.

Cheers,
James

Not a Cichlid. I can tell you, thats a Kissing Gourami, specifically a Green Kissing Gourami and by the looks of it, its quite big! Its stunning :hyper:

Well, thats certain then yes? It is a Green Kissing Gourami and NOT a cichlid, and certainly NOT a Giant Gourami Juvi as i initially feared.

He/she certainly is big, almost from the tip of my fingers to the base of my palm. Dodgy measurements as everyone is different sizes, but its all i have to hand. The moonlight is the same size also.

ID'ing this fish really threw me off as i thought (assumed) ALL gourami's had the feely antennae? Obviously not then...

Cheers Carl,
James

Kissing Gourami do not have the Antenna that other gouramis have.

I'm certain its a Green Kissing Gourami (definitely not a Giant Gourami), if not judge for yourself :hey:
Here is a juvi Green Kissing Gourami:

When i first saw it i shouted out Kissing Gourami  Then i saw no feelers, and it was green/silver and i panicked and thought Giant Gourami but wasnt sure. The finnage shape and body shape made me think cichlid, but the face and lips screamed Kissing Gourami.

Well panic over, and i'm confident in your ID. So thank you Carl :)

I wouldn't have had a clue of that one, i would have said some kind of Cichlid as well.

good ID Carl!

Thank you Ludwig, not that Carls ID wasnt proof enough, but your input sort of confirms it in stone :)

6-12" <-- blimey, they're bigger than i thought. hopefully mine is a 6 incher
