Plasma Or Lcd?

i've just bought a 42" 1080p LG LCD and the quality of it is superb, 'normal' tv is ok but blu rays and the Xbox360 look staggering on it :D

We got a Mitsubishi medallion 52" TV upstairs. I think it is a flat screen or something. It has a lamp in it, when the lamp burns out it costs like $250 just to replace. The 5 year warrenty covered the cost of the first two lamps, but now the warrenty is expired so next lamp we get to pay for :/ .

The 40" Sony Bravia LCD in the basement is absolutly wonderful though. We haven't had any problems with it.

As a gift I got a XOvision stero for my car. It has a little 3" touch screen and has the almost pointless ability to play DVDs. Image quality is really nice, but its just so damn tiny  .

Everyone I know who is into decent audio visual quality goes with plasma screens. My boss picked a top of the range Sony LCD and was very disappointed with it.

LCD = grey instead of black. The contrast on even the best ones is just awful (in the range of 3000:1). Additionally, plasma is better for fast moving shots.

The Panasonic Veira is pretty much the point I would be aiming at.

I would never buy an LCD as a main viewing TV.

Edit---

An interesting (though fairly one sided) site on the myths regarding flat screen TVs is here

An intriguing quote is thus:

Results from an independent research conducted by the AVT.O.P. Messetechnik laboratory in Germany, showed that plasmas tend to use the same – and sometimes less – amounts of power than LCD screens.

Just to make me look really dumb, I have to ask this question - The TV has 2 HDMI sockets and I have a DVD player with an HDMI socket, so instead of having everything going thru on scart leads, can I buy an HDMI lead and attach the DVD to the TV via HDMI? Then leave the sky box and video player (yes I still have videos) via scart leads?

I assume thats what I can do, just checking before I go buy an HDMI lead!! I mean what else is HDMI for?

Sorry I know its a daft question, but only ever had TVs with scart sockets before. When I bought the DVD player I thought well whooppee it has HDMI but Id know idea what it meant :)

(Hides in shame for being dumb)

I wouldn't touch Plamsa with a greased barge pole. They have to be re-charged every few years and are so much more unreliable.
I think some people need to realise that plasma TVs have moved on since 1999...

Currently you will find that both LCD and plasma TVs have a stated longevity of 60,000 hours. That's nearly 7 years being left on for 24 hours a day, or 36 years at 8 hours a day.

I personally don't think anyone in my family has had a TV for 36 years without replacing it, so I don't think the point above is valid in any way.

It helps stop anyone making the grave error of choosing an LCD screen when they want good quality.

meh, im sure its possible to spot the difference between the quality but i certainly couldn't see any difference between a plasma and an lcd. oh apart from the price. sure if i had stupid amounts of money to spend i would have got a plasma but in my price range there was bugger all difference apart from the plasmas not supporting 1080p.
