Whats the difference, which is best?

Looking at a Phillips 42" HD ready freeview plasma, but LCDs about the same cost, all I want is to be able to watch the TV (when Im actually allowed the remote of course!), play DVDs/Videos, nothing too technical.

I'm no expert but apparantly LCD are more energy efficient. Plasma tvs are better quality at bigger sizes. Your best bet is to go on a tech forum and ask there. Which? magazine do some good reviews as well. One thing I read is that Panasonic are excellent. Which? gave the Panasonic Viera TX-32LZD80 the highest score of them all recently but this is a 26-37 inch LCD tv. Scored 84% The larger Panasonics, (42+50 inch) TH-50PX8B also did well in the review getting best buys. Scoring 67% and 72% respectivly.
If I were you I'd look for the slightly older models that have almost the same quality but are selling for much less brand new.
Shop around as there will be big price differences between highstreet/ online/ other online prices.

lcd are better if you going to be viewing the tv within 5-8 meters but if your sitting atleast 8 metres go for plasma as picture quality is poor.
but with a plasma the brightness decreases over time whereas lcd doesnt

LCDs are cheaper to operate and run cooler.
Image quality is similar and depends more on brand rather than plasma vs LCD. My cousin had a 4ft Sony plasma and swapped it for a LG LCD and the LG gave a better picture. I've heard similar things from other people too. Have a look at a store that sells them and compare the actual picture. Then get the one you like.
Most people are going for LCD because they are cheaper to buy, cheaper to operate, and don't burn the screen as much as a plasma. They are also lighter than a plasma so are a bit easier to move, but they are still heavy.

wld never buy a plasma i wld say
thats me tho everyone to there own
we are going to buy a full hd lcd 42ins early next year prob a sony or sumsong ???

i have 2 lcds, and i love the look of plasma(( shiny)), but dont you think they are very overpriced?? im like you i never get the flippin remote either :(
one of mine is samsung the other is ....oh i forgot lol, i got the big one from PC world, and the boys got me the other for my birthday ( think it was tesco but not 100% )

OK, looks like LCD then, Actually thinking more 37" as well, as having measured up 42" is massive!

Thanks guys. Will have a look around more and see which is better.

ive got a 52" plasma, it heats the whole house and has virtually doubled our electric bills. Go liquid crystal everytime!

We've got a 37" samsung LCD that we got last year, been very impressed with it :good:

oh and laides - take control....... OH doesn't get a look in with the remote

LCD for me.
Few months ago I bought a LG Flatron M228WD which I use as my PC monitor, free view TV and PS3. Very impressed, especially since it's 1080p.

oh and laides - take control....... OH doesn't get a look in with the remote

Its not an OH, its the kids, 4 year old to be precise, who insists on nothing but his channels for the entirity of his waking hours

ha ha, well if you can't control your kids....... ;) (just kidding) :D

Well its only fair when you tie em up in front of it, to let them watch what they want :D

On a serious note, hes autistic, doesnt like any deviation from his normal routine, which includes his TV programs.

Anyway, have gone for an LG 37" LCD hd ready with freeview (not that we get freeview in this area, 2011 though). And a new stand to put it on!! Should be interesting trying to connect it all up, I think cussing will be involved

Plasma= too expensive, good looking teleboxes tho
LCD= uses less energy, quality can be not as good as plasma

depends if you are rich, if you have enough oney go for plasma if not lcd will be gr8
