So I will be setting up anew tank that a friend gave me
I have decided on the filter
It is approx 25 gallons
I want to try sand for the first time, and I also want some live plants
Now I have heard that live plants cannot grow in sand. I also heard others say they can grow in sand
If it is true, how deep should the sand be, and I also heard dangerous gases can build up in the sand

So can live plants grow in sand

I will be using play sand

It depends on what plants you want.
I have easy ones like amazon swords & some crypts which seem to be doing ok in sand.
Ask on the planted section for more detailed advice

To be honest, nearly all plants will be able to grow in sand. The only problem that can arise is nutrient deficiency due to the sand being inert. This can be remedied by adding good quality root tabs such as TMC or TPN.

I thought you couldn't plant rhizomes into the sand, because they rot, that's why plants like java fern and anubias need to be attached to something.

Yeah, but that's true of those plants in a gravel substrate too. It's just the way they grow, not a problem with sand itself.

I successfully grow all these plants in sand; vallis, cryptocorynes, Amazon sword, dwarf sag, Indian fern.
