I don't know if any of you remember my thread in DIY about how I set up a nice planted tank for about $80, but here's more pictures of the same tank. It's a 10 gallon tank with a DIY filtration system, DIY yeast CO2, super-cheap substrate fertilizers (Roughly 10 cents for a one month supply), 46W of light and a very low power consumption. If you assume that a 50W heater maintaining the temperature 5-8 Celcius above room temperature draws 10W constantly, the lights draw 23W constantly and the filter draws 7W constantly, that's only 40W of power. 6 months out of the year, it's cold here, and since our house is heated electrically, any energy used by the fish tank is just energy not consumed by the heater, so the actual power consumption drops to 20W. That's 7.4 KwH of power a year, or the energy consumed running a 5 horsepower lawnmower for 2 hours. It would take 40 years for this tank to use as much energy as it takes to go to work in a hummer.
