Pegnant Guppie

Hi there Nurse22, OK I am far from a specialist as you will tell from my messages. A few questions for you!

You say you have just put up your tank! How did you prepare the water before you added your fish?

Did you have your water tested before you added your fish?

Have you had your filter running perminantly?

What is the temerature of your water? Are you using a heater?

What sort of fish do you have?

Did you buy all your fish at the same time from the same store?

I was asked all these questions when I had my first problem by my LFS and they really helped me.

Maybe if you answer these questions on here, some of the people who use this site will be able to help you as some of these guys have amazing knowledge of livebearers.

Goodluck my friend, we will get there eventually.

You seem to have 2 female guppies and a male, as well as a platy (unsure of sex) and a neon tetra. It's a beautiful tank; you are doing a great job for your first time. Good luck ;)

That looks more like a cardinal tetra to me because the red colour is covering all of the bottom if it's body and with neon tetra is olny covers half. Yep, the orange fish is a platy.

Well my Guppie has had a fry, but only one...... she still seems bil though is this normal?

It can take upto 24 hrs for fry to be born.
Have you got her isolated? or is she just having them into the main tank?
Chances are they will have been eaten if that's the case.
Guppy fry...frying tonite

Only joking.. you have to be real quick as the others will follow her round waiting for lunch to be born :-(

Hi All, well I am getting realy worried now! My Guppie had her fry (only 1) on Wednesday, it's now Friday morning and there are still no sign of any others!!! She is bigger than ever and her scales on her tummy and back have gone like a gry kind of colour!!!! Please tell me this is normal? I have put the single fry in a isolation tank but only one of those floating ones as my new tank for them as only had the water in it for 5 days I darnt put them in that one. I did have mum in it too but she was doing nothing other than getting distressed so I took her out of it. Is there anything alse I can do?????

Cheers Yvonne

Hi Again, I forgot to ask you guys, what is the best way to get the water ready in a new tank ready for fry? As i discoved she was preggy only last week I went and bought another tank and started getting the water ready but it has only been in there 5 days and she has had 1 fry already!!!! Any advice

Yvonne

The best way to go is water from your main tank . Thats if Your putting a mum in there..That way it reduces stress. Then gradually chance about 10% a day fro fresh once the babies are born. Babies need clean water!! and a higher temerapture of about 80/81 degrees.
Remove the mum about 24 hours after the birth..that way she has time to rest. Then its safe to let the fry out of the net. They grow much better in a tank rather than a net.

I think the problem is the fact that you moved her while she was giving birth. Best thing to do in that situation is just leave them and try and save as many as you can. Some times they abort ..or it maybe the babies have dies inside her :-(
All you can do is watch and hope for the best.

Maybe someone with more experience of this can help you... I hope so!!

Hope it all turn out ok :/

 Hi everyone, well I am still here and so is my Guppie and her 1 fry! But still no sign of any more, even though she looks like she is going to burst!!!. Last night when I looked in on her I found a long clear thing hanging from her anus, it was bigger than poo and had a kinda bulge on the end of it, anyone got any idea as to what it could have been?.

Cheers Yvonne

When fish are no 100% they tend to get transparent stringy poo.
I don't think there is anything you can do...as long as shes eating and seems ok just leave her too it.

If shes still in the main tank I would try and get some more big plants to put in a corner. Guppies are very particular about where they go to have fry. Mine completely dissapereared for about half an hour and the first I knew was 2 baby fry swimming across my isolation tank..lol And when she went to finish off she did the same.... then more babies appeared. :)
She may feel more comfortable to give birth is she has alot of cover, maybe thats what stopping her. She will afterall do her best to give her youngsters the best chance ( even if she does turn and eat them once shes finished..lol)
Signs to look out for before she gives birth.
Seems more lethargic..swimming slowly...resting tail on things in the tank...avoids the other fish.... may go to feed, but if you watch closely she spits it out.
If you watch the fish alot you will get to know when shes *off it* then you know to be ready. If your putting them straight into the other tank.. best way is to add half water from the new clean tank and half from the old tank to a large jug( I have one just for the fish). Add the fish as you catch them...this way they have a little time to adjust to the difference in the water(try to make sure its about 80d in the baby tank)
Snails are excellent in a baby tank they eat all the unwanted food and so stop it spoiling. I even put them in the breeder net for the first 2 weeks with the babies.

I hope she has her babies soon..sounds like shes going to have a big batch
Keep us informed please :kana:
