Pegnant Guppie

Hi there, yes I think she must have been pregnant when we bought her. I have a few plants but I think I need more! The temerature of the water is around 27 but at times going up to 28. She keeps going to an area in the tank which is near the filter and where our largest plant is, she goes there on her own! I really want her to be healthy and for her fry to be born in a safe enviroment so I have been out and bought a little tank which I think floats in the main tank, I say think as I live in Germany and cannot read the instructions on where to put it. She looks very healthy, but as her tummy is quite big I feel she could be quite near her fry being born. I wish I could attach the photo of her, anyadvice on how to do this? I am quite dense so step by step guides would be greatful. Thanks so much for your help

Yvonne
Ok, the temperature is high this means that she is going to give birth soon because when the water temp. is high the eggs in the gravid spot grow more quickly.
When delivery time is near the female guppy will be looking for a hiding spot behind plants, my females always hang around the heater  The most noticeable thing which I spot in my females is that they don't eat. This is my indication that the females will be delivering soon.
When you keep the female in the breeding box make sure is in between a time limit of 24-48 hours any longer and she will be too stressed out to give birth. If she dosn't delivery in 24 hours you ought to realise her back into the main aquarium. Keeping the fish confined to small quarters for greater than 2 days won't help the fish :( Guppy Females need to exersive to assist in the maturation of the fry. If you believe that the female is too large to release and fear her safety, place her near the heater. You might even want to increase the temperature of the tank to help with the maturation process of the babies and help the female deliver. But agian like before, don't leave her in the breeding tank for too long. After your guppy has given birth reduce the temperature back to what you have before you increased the temp.
It would be a good idea to mark the date of the delivery on a calendar. You should begin rechecking the female after 25 days for signs of delivering the fry once again :) Depending of the temperature of the tank the female guppies can produce fry every 25-90 days. But the higher the temperature the faster the rate the female matures the eggs.
...I think that covered all the guppy delivering things

One Question: How large is your tank?

If any of you need help reading german, I can help. I can read, write and speak german (my fathers german and he wanted me to speak his language). I'm not perfect but I still can translate things.

cool thanks for filling in the info that I missed guppylover. That's some pretty thorough info you got there. I can tell you're really into guppies, not just from your name but from the extent of your knowledge about them.

Hi all, thanks ever so much for all of your replys. Ok first of all I don't know what gallon size my tank is but here are the measurements:

60 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm

I note one of the last messages said it sounds as though I have a lot of fish! I really want to do this correctly so any advice is welcome, however my tank looks fairly empty, saying that though, I have no wish to purchase any more, I would rather have a few healthy fish than many unhealthy ones. Can anyone recomed a good book on Tropical fish keeping?

Cheers Yvonne

Thanks David  I like to learn a lot about the fish I like.

Ok n.y.parsons you tank is 54 litres and 11.878326 Imperial Gallons. I worked that out here: http://www.cfac.fsnet.co.uk/Calculators.htm Your tank does sound a bit overstocked...

Hi Guppylover, I have emailed you the photo of my Guppie which you asked for.

Thank you for all your help

One great book I can recommend to anyone is "The Complete Fishkeeper" by Joseph S. Levine. It's a bit dated, but it does the job :D It has tons of info, more than I've encountered in any other book about fishkeeping.

Thanks for your help, Great information. I now find myself wondering what to do if my Guppie has her fry before I have bought another tank and had the chance to get the water ready -_- . Any advice other than one of those little tanks that float in the main tank? Also how do I know if my tank is too overcrowded, as some of you have said that you think it is, yet it looks empty??? :dunno:

Yvonne

The general rule is 1 inch per fish per gallon, but this advice obviously wouldn't apply for something over 4 inches IMO(like 4 inch fish in 4 gallon tank). You could keep an over stocked tank IF you don't over feed, has fish that dwell in various levels(like not having all fish as top dwellers) of the tank, have a good filter and do water changes more often than regular.
If your female has her fry before you get the tank you could:
- buy a breeding trap/net to put the fry in temperarily
- fry like to reside at the top so add floating plants(especially live moss) for the fry to hide in if u dont have a trap.
- or if you buy the tank on time, just add water from your main cycled tank that way you don't have to cycle the smaller tank.

Looks like the red tailed guppy is preggers too ;)
Oh and the other fish looks like a platy to me.. yellowie coulor with a reddish brown tail. It looks like a female but its hard to tell. If the fins underneath are all triangle shape its female, but if the 2 front are triangle and the back near the anus is long and thin then its a male. Keep an eye on that one too as its a livebearer and could be with fish :p

Hello again, Yvone. I live on post, here in Hohenfels. I'm not sure where Monchengladbach is. I'm sure we could get there if we had directions.
I have put up posts on this site and some people are suggesting that my fish have a fungus or some kind of disease. I just put up my tank and then my fish started dieing. If my fish weren't already diseased, I don't see how they could catch it from a new tank.
