Peacocks Vs Mbuna

I think I'm gonna stay with my original planning. Mbuna it is. :good:

You won't regret it! Just started a journal about moving from peacocks to mbuna, and see Lee has already pointed you in the direction of his. I'm picking mine up tomorrow and cannot wait.

Yeah. I've checked out your journal. Pretty nice! Plus I came across a shop here in US that has quite a selection in stock. Just waiting to get some good referrals about them.

Private breeders are often better than shops - cheaper too! Be wary of the "mixed malawi" tanks that are a feature of a lot of LFS - best to know exactly what's going in your tank so you can accommodate them.

Are there any specific breeders you have dealt with and had success?

Glad to see you went Mbuna , Truly, They are so much more active.
I should explain my reasoning for my post, as I was the target of that advice rather, and just sharing,

If you were in Colorado rather than 1000 miles plus away,Some of the best around me are in Utah, another 500 miles, I could turn you on to some great breeders.

So the following pictures are of my MISTAKE. Yes they look great now, all getting along, but!! They are mostly juvenile and I have been warned they wont likely continue to get along. And in any event I plan on expanding.

I'm a novice with these guys , hell with all fish in general, I just have a stellar coach.

At the moment, I have a Supherhead, a German red, a Lawanda, and 2, yes 2 Eureka ( I need to fix that), all males in with 4x Electric yellow, 3 Red zebra, 2x Yellowfin Acei, 4 less than 3 inch red shoulders I bought on a whim and cant Identify males form females yet ( big mistake) and a Synodontis Euptera(featherfin cat) He actually runs the tank.. Large and In charge
If these were all full grown I may be fully if not over stocked. I run 2x Eheim 2215 and a HOB with filter floss rated to 30 gal on this 55 gal 4' tank.

I want to add some very specific fish of each genus, I am limited not only by size of tank but compatibility.

Looks peaceful enough, and is for now

Mbuna's dig , make caves, and stake out territories ,they are always active!! yes these are Acei in the left picture but same behavior from them. SO cool to watch, the right centers one of the yet to be of size red shoulders.

I am In the process of cycling a 2nd 55 to separate and expand BOTH and be able to add more variations.. :good:

I love em all. And cant wait to see more.
You show me yours I'll show you more of mine  lol

edit added lots of color to the post as this is what an African tank is

Hey Maiugirl, would that be Live Fish Direct in Utah? I've ben checking out their site along with a few others. Have not been thrilled with the local shops selection so I will probably order online. Your set-up looks very nice but it does sound like you do need to separate some those boys  If you have some breeders sites you trust, please send them along. I still have some time until my cycle is finished so I'd like to get my stocking set soon. I'll try to get some shots of my tank up shortly. Unfortunately that's all of mine that I have to show

Only a couple locally (London UK) so probably no good for you!

Yeah That's one of em, my ex used to do swaps with Josh, we would drive to Utah with coolers full of bags of fish once every 3-4 months and make 2-3 stops.

This one is local to me, less than 10 minute drive, and who I'm using but he Does not ship that I know of, local pickup only cichlidsofco great looking fish he raises at home.

I could likely get em free from my ex but I am trying not to be indebted to him.

Look around, maybe check if there is an ACA breeder in your area American Cichlid Association

:good: on Live Fish Direct because I did find some fish I liked there. I will check ACA to see if there are any breeders nearby.

Thanks
Steve

This is the tank for now......

I will decide if more rock is needed after I stock.

Looks awesome!!

Yeah you might need more rock depending on how many you stock.
The Rocks in my tank are hollow ceramic so not only do I get the spaces between and under but each has space inside as well.
Your rock however is much nicer looking in my opinion.

Mbuna Dig and may make a mess of your nicely placed plants.
Are they real?
I potted mine so they cant dig em up.

Thanks. I figured I would need more rock. I bought out all the largest pieces my lfs had and I'm waiting for more to come in. The plants are old stock I had from my past tanks. They look fine for now but I'm sure they will be floating if I leave them in there once it's stocked. I def would consider potting some real plants later on.
