Ooopsie

unfortunately no i dont

at the end of the day, they have always been helpfull and good on knowledge, never tried flogging me anything b4

Tbh some people here seem so snappy about info on betta's and i feel slightly intimidated asking for advice

again if some people were slightly more friendly with their advice maybe i would have asked for more info

and which i remember rightly mentioning getting one girl to go with my male, to which some1 on here told me to get atleast 4

very misleading info on both sides

Hi
What you have to remember is that there are a lot of people on this forum who have kept bettas for years. They too may have made mistakes in the past and are only pointing these things out to you so you dont make the same mistakes. The guys at the lfs may not have ever kept bettas themselves. I know who i'd be listening to?
You have to accept that if your doing something which could be detrimental to your fishes health, you have to accept that people will tell you.
I dont mean to be blunt, but its the only way it can be put.

Hope all goes well

Yep that's what we started with and we now have 7 females together in a tank and 4 males in separate tanks of their own. The females do pick on each other but the more you have the more spread out the bullying is :)

I hope you didn't feel that this was misleading as I did say the males were in separate tanks :(

theres a diff from being blunt, and a diff from being rude

i have found a few to be rude

at the end of the day just coz i may not know as much does not mean i need to be spoken to like an idiot

i sought advice on here and also at my lfs, both said atleast 4 females with my male

i accept now that i must seperate them, but its not like i didnt ask for help

and no netty its fine honey lol x

You can find large acrylic plastic "critter keeper" boxes in the repile dept. at large stores or some small LFS have them too. The big ones are about 1.5 or 2 gallons. If you decide to buy, check them carefully for cracks as they can have them.
I've had a rescue VT in one until he got too big and then now I have a plakat in one and he's happy. I change the water once a week or slightly more like every 5 days. I put him up high in a bookshelf so he catches the warm air currents which rise in the room where he's at.
Just an idea for you as an alternative. He's a very beautiful fish. I' too, live far away from you or would take it. Consider keeping it though maybe.........

I can understand that completely, people can be a little snappy and I have had my fair share of rude responses to some stuff I've asked. It seems strange to me cause this place should be a place where people feel free to go and ask questions without being judged.

If I were you I would either try to make a make shift divider OR keep a very very VERY watchful eye on them until you can get another tank.

Goot luck!

Hi Phoenix,
Try not to take things too personally, some people just phrase things wrong and it ends up sounding as if they are being blunt.
Your lfs was wrong to give you this advice but don't be put off too much as they are probably knowledgable when it comes to other fish.
Lfs get a raw deal on this forum sometimes (rightly so in some cases) but not all of them are bad. I work at an aquatic store and try to give the best advice I can. If I don't know, then I'll ask a colleague.
I'm certainly not in it for the money, my last job paid £6,000 more a year and we don't work on commission. There are other members on here who also work at their lfs and I'm sure they feel the same.
Best bet, is do your own research and compare it to what lfs staff tell you. If it sounds as though they are fobbing you off, then don't use them again.
As for your Betta, it wouldn't hurt to get a small "critter keeper" for him as long as it is filtered and heated.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :good:

im dividing my tank up

id rather not lose dave, i love him to bits xx

critter keeper, they plastic?

heater is ok, but can i not do daily water changes?

this is coz i have my eye on a black orchid if this idea of a critter keeper works, he can go on my shelf :good:

I've heard that the CAN work with air stones and water changes.

Yeah. You don't need a filter since you'll be changing out the water regularly. Put it up high so it stays warm but you might want to check it periodically.. Put in a little plant that is taller and goes to the surface but narrow enough to give him room to swim around. I don't use any rocks on the bottom as it's easier to keep clean and to tell if the fish is regular about his poops etc.
Condition the tap water to take out the chlorine etc and add in just a tiny pinch of aquarium salt to keep him healthy.
I use a little tupperware bowl when I change out the water. I use a soft net to scoop him out and then put him in the small bowl--which I cover BTW so he doesn't jump out. Then, I use my hand and scrub it with very hot water and I scrub off his decorations too. If you use soap which you should from time to time be sure to rinse and rinse and rinse again as any amount of soap with be fatal to your fish. They get used to be changed out over time in my opinion.
The whole process of changing out water takes about 15 minutes if that. Doing that will keep him healthy and happy. He might be a whole lot happier to have his own place too. He might be building bubblenests in no time to show you how happy he is.
These are just ideas and suggestions for you. I've found that they work for me. Hope this helps you create a good home for your CrownTail. He's a real beauty!

PS He might like a little ornament as a hiding place--like a bridge or something to hide behind if he wants to...

I prefer to keep my boys in a filtered tank as it's less stress on them having to change their water so frequently. I also prefer to keep all my fish in filtered tanks but that's just me.
Having said that, many people keep their Bettas in unfiltered tanks and do water changes every 2-3 days so it is personal preference.
I've never used a critter keeper but I think other people have. I paid a small fortune for my original Betta tanks, so I'm not the best person to ask!

I use the critter keepers and also buy the plastic storage containers with lids on. They are almost transparent. Hubby drills a few holes in the lids. The good thing about these is they are quite long and shallow so if you have a fish with swim bladder issues they are really good. :good:

can you use a water heater in the plastic critter keepers

i have a small internal filter i could prob use, just finding a tank thats not massive tut

I found these tiny little heaters that are pad kind of things. They're cheapie cheapie made in China things but supposedly safe to use in plastic. They're supposed to raise the temp by 5 degrees. I got them in case of emergency which did happen when my furnace went out one day. They did do the job they were supposed to.
Kind of hard to find.. I got them thru the Drs Foster and Smith website. I kept a wary eye on the temp in his bowl tho... and kept a thermom. in there with him... He was oblivious, bubblenesting away.

Liz don't you put a heating pad under some of your bowls? That's right liz will get you sorted out. She knows whereof she is speaking about.... :good:
