Oldwhitewoods 200l Nature Aquarium Journal

Amazing!

Its a wonderland!

Why not get a black background?

That rotala has filled in nicely. That plant has never disappointed me, great stuff. Glad it's working so well for you. It does look like LOST, just put a toy plastic plane inside. But that wouldn't be very ADA, now would it? ;)

Lovely progress Neil. L. arcuata is a great plant too, should redden up nicely if there's enough light and iron. I grew it a while back in my Dutch layout and found it quite slow to start but was worth the wait. Have you also considered Rotala rotundafolia (AKA R. indica)?

I've been watching the entire series of Lost series 1 on DVD this weekend, very addictive!

Nice tank mate, the scape really seems to have come together nicely.

The tank is not good IMO but thanks for the comments all the same.

You would THINK the fish would be in their element, but I have a fairly large shoal of bleeding heart tetras in there about the size of a 10p piece each. They do nothing but skulk in the background and hide refusing to show themselves, they're the most timid fish I have ever known. The harlequins are scattered around and don't form a shoal, as if they can't be bothered. The shrimp look almost bloated and have taken on a dirty green, brownish colour, they lazilily hang around on jutting pieces of wood cleaning the moss and fussing over patches of sand - they add humour to the scene with their tardyness! I have about three ottos in there which must be some of the most toughest fish I've ever kept, they're at least doing their job!

Front left is a CO2 diffuser in glass.

Right green pipes are the eheim outlet shepherds crook pipe and standard inlet one gets with an eheim filter purchase, both in a daft green colour because that is all they produce.

Thanks - I just couldn't clearly see. The diffuser looks like it has some sort of grey spoon type device and the Eheim outlet on the right hand is also quite unusual in the setup.

Unusual is my middle name. No not really. The diffuser grey thing is part of the ADA grey parts set (really funky tubing and suckers for your CO2 kit), the eheim outlet is placed in the same way one would place ADA lily pipes. That's basically it. :good:

Yes some red would definatly help in this tank IMO, i would go with the L.arcuata, i dont dose extra iron and it colours up nicely for me, i think the Rotala rotundifolia needs low nitrate levels rather than extra iron to colour it up otherwise it grows quite green.

What type of moss are you using? it looks a little messy if you dont mind me saying

I have to agree Ottos are some of the toughest fish i have kept as well, i think once they survive the initial period in a tank they will live a long time, although how much impact they auctually make on algae in a tank is debatable unless you have lots and lots of them.

The rotala is the green variety and hence wont turn red. I think you are right on the arcuata but I prefer the java moss to look this way, gives it that wabi-sabi appearance. :good:

Sorry i should be more specific, i was more commenting on Georges red plant suggestions, im aware the Rotala you have is the green variety :)

I've been having a think and I think I have gone wrong with this layout, look at this picture

In my mind that is a better arrangement of wood that I have right now. I think I just went overboard adding as much wood as I could get in there, but this has ended up making something that looks a bit daft. I think I am going to change the wood and actually remove some pieces. What do you guys think? looking purely at the wood arrangement do you think this is better than it currently is?

I would have to agree :) it looks better now. I think it is because with all the wood in there, there was no variation, it was the same wherever you looked at it. Now you have highs and lows which break up the scape more. I have learned with my nano that sometimes less is more.

Sam

PS what light do you have over the tank? :LO::lol::lol: only kidding! Sorry couldnt resist!
