Ok Lets Get A General Consensus Here

It depends on the Point Loadings of the tank itself, if you think what the joists are actually supporting per inch square it can become very little. I have just installed my 100 gallon, granted downstairs but on suspended flooring and the actual weight is spread over 3 pads 12x24 inches giving 864 square inches which is exactly 6 square feet. The pressure on 1 inch of flooring actually works out to (including cabinet and extra bits and bobs) 420 kg / 864" = 0.486 kg/"2.

This is all just basic calculations from my own noggin so it may not be perfect, I would not recommend having it upstairs but the beauty of wood is that you would see it starting to move rather than just all of a sudden disapperaring through a tank shaped gap in the floor.

Wood has a lot of give, glass doesn't. The chances of having a tank come through are very slim. Far more likely is that the floor will bow and then the stand will be off centre causing the glass to lose integrity.

The end result is still a lot of water on the floor though.

Sounds like a big risk, maybe ill give the rio 180 a miss :S

Thanks for all the input so far :)

I'm sat facing my rio 300 and mentally reducing it to a 180. Would I put it upstairs in my house? Quite probably. But I'm a damn good joiner, and would disperse the wait well. No problem.

have u thought in terms of a leek that could change everything .i flooded a bath in an upstairs flat and it got into all the wireing and made the hole house electric and yip the floor did colapse but........that was an old building i kno know wants to think of leeks but they do happen

well, i havent got the strongest floorboards and my dad told me it could easily take 120, but i asked about a rio 180 and he said he'd have to see the size of it to see if it could hold the weight... or just ring the builder that placed the floorboards down...

I have 4 tanks on the third floor of my house. A 90 gallon, a 26 gallon, and 2 tens. (All in the same room) Been there a year,
so far, no problems......
