odd tropical fish/crayfish...etc

i would like some brightly coloured tropical additions for my aquarium.
my water is slightly alkaline and resonably large tank.
i would prefer fish that are more active in the middle or top of the tank, any suggestions???

I think we're gonna need more info than that to provide a good recommendation. How many gallons is the tank? What fish (if any) are currently living in it? Is it cycled?
